ironic you say that… 2 days ago (on twitter) jay was apparently asking ?uestlove about making an album. ?uest ended up writing what is being called ‘an open letter to jay electronica’ wherein he basically tells him it’d be better to do 10 tracks w/ one producer. im not really a fan, but i thought it was interesting to get his point of view.

totally feel you on the whole albums are dead thing too. the number of people who have like 2000 artists/3000 songs on iTunes is getting stupid. its better in the UK but not much

I’ve given up on most other people’s libraries. It’s a treasure trove of disappointment. “Ah that new pimp master trick album! Fuck…just the singles.”

I believe techno and house artists do what you mention Kno, they just vomit *singles*. With an increasingly internet savvy fan base, artists I think will have to make a really strong impression on them, for better or worse.

Look what Atmosphere did with the past 4 Sad Clown Bad Dubs, then they came out with Lemons. That formula was successful and didn’t over saturate the market with Atmosphere. In essence I feel like a little experimentation is good. Panacea went out and had the fans build support for a vinyl pressing with limited edition number vinyl, t-shirts, etc via kickstarter.com. Vinyl has started to make a comeback and this might be able to be taken advantage of by artists.

different genres are more condusive to having cohesive albums than others. dance and club music genres are singles genres. doesnt make it vomit.

i think ?uest’s suggestion to Jay Elec was more a “if you want to go down in history…” suggestion than a “if you want your album to be financially successful” suggestion

you guys should watch the “Hip-Hop Blogs & Social Change” panel that got posted on all the blogs today, i watched the first 45 minutes, Oddisee and Meka talked in detail about the “free music before the retail album” kinda thing. i liked it.

Anticipating j-zone/marco polo/deac/kno tracks. “i fucking like everything” made me laugh.

I’m leaning towards dropping 10 amazing songs but with quicker turnaround for the next release. Maybe do like an EP every 2-3 months or something. *shrug*

Looking at my purchases over the past 2-3 years, all of them are either albums with 10-12 songs i find mostly amazing, or albums that were preceded by multiple free projects and videos with stuff I loved, that made me feel like I owed the artist and had to support. So it might be more lucrative nowadays too, I’m sure other people think like that. As opposed to 10 years ago when it seemed like you were getting more value with more tracks on one CD.

I know quite a few people who fall into that “rarely own full albums” category. And it almost always astounds me. You could blame it on the technology back when KaZaA was “in” software to be using, but the most efficient means of “stealing” music nowadays is a torrent file that usually packages things as ALBUMS (or even discogs) anyway. And people still somehow manage to come away with mere fragments of record. It’s an attention span issue more than anything else.

As someone who still buys plastic CDs, I’d find it extremely unfortunate if artists had to start trending towards shorter releases (or limited vinyl only releases) in order to survive. You can’t fault them for refusing to invest cash in a dying medium. You can fault the assholes killing it though.

Im pumped for this! But 5 skits is a LOT especially considering most are useless and add nothing to an album listening experience. Im not saying this will be the case by the way, just what usually happens.
Unless your Masta Ace and make a whole album like a movie with skits that fit in seamlessly around the songs!

^ ala Disposable Arts? I really liked those skits. It was a good move. I am sure Pack and QN5 know what they want and didn’t do it for lack of material or knowledge about how to make a good record. Rest assured!

With titles like “The Support Group” and “Closure” serving as bookends to the album (as well as other titles of tracks near the beginning and end), I think it’s not too hard to say that the album will be cohesive and have a concept.

At least Pack has ‘em talking…

You can name a bunch of artists who used skits and still somehow had good albums-Masta Ace, Eminem, Wu-Tang, yada yada yada.

Didn’t mean to cause such a stir with my comment about the skits. I appreciate listening to full albums. It adds something to each individual song when being heard in the context of a larger work. I’m just always sketchy about albums that have them because I feel that skits rarely have the longevity that the actual songs do. By looking through the track listing though, I can feel a sense of cohesion just by the song titles. I don’t expect this to disappoint by any stretch.

also, given the nature of this digital age of music, you can always stick a song such as “Happy Days” or “Absolutely Positive” into the album, thereby making it longer… use some fucking initiative! those songs obviously reqiured days of work and were handed out for free!

I’m fucking pumped…btw skits can enhance the listening experience if done correctly. Listen to any album by QN5 or any Redman album if you want to see the magic of a well placed funny skit.

As a side rant—nobody cares about albums anymore, anyway. Considering the effort we put into sequencing and layout of albums, to turn around and see, say, Will Rap For Food selling a fraction of the number of digital units that “Lynguistics” sells as a single track is fucking depressing.

Who pays .99 for one song but won’t cough up another $8-9 for 17 more dope tracks? Apparently about 1000 people a month. I’d rather people download the whole damn thing for free—they’re missing out.

And my two cents to the Kno and others convo about people only listening to one or two tracks. I just don’t get these people. I was flicking though a friend’s iPod once and notices Aquemini. When I went to put it on he only had ‘Rosa Parks’, which is ridiculous. I stick to whole albums about 95% of the time (322 artists, 673 albums, 8640 songs on iTunes). However, I am of the opinion that many of my favourite albums are between the 35 and 50 minute mark in length. The few which differ from this rule tend to actually be QN5.

It’s even got to a point where labels are signing singles instead of the actual artist. It was nice.
