Which Solo Debut Are You Most Looking Forward To?

2008 has been a stellar year for the QN5 vets, but now it’s time for the less-prominent members of the squad to step out from within the shadows to take the spotlight with their debut solo albums. We’re speaking about Session (of Extended Famm) and Mr. SOS.

Session – The Volcanic Patience of Starvation

Session has seen his share of action on the QN5 front, as a founding member of Extended Famm, a Plague affiliate and a constant collaborator with many an artist. Long considered the “ODB of QN5″, Session’s aggressive street-oriented music has stuck out like a sore thumb from the rest of the roster – so much so, that creative differences led to his departure from Extended Famm.

A lot has been made about Sessions foray’s into “mainstream” territory. Myspace-exclusive tracks like “Chea!” and “Diamond Girl” left fans of his ‘battle-ready’ joints like “Watch Yo Back” and “The MC 2003″ confused. The reason of Session’s New Money mixtape found him hitting the streets on foot and taking his catalog to the people, regardless of police harassment.

But in 2008 – Session is EXTREMELY hungry – which is undoubtedly demonstrated via his venomously aggressive delivery and bloody-knuckled wordplay. Those that doubt his lyrical ability need to look no further his now classic “Don’t Do It”, the conceptual mastery of “Route of Evil” and most recently his monstrous appearance on WNYU Radio where he spit some killer new verses.

The Spicasso project has seen it’s share of starts, stalls and stops, but is nearing completely in the coming months. You can expect a bevvy of instant face-smashing classics as well concepts galore. There is a DARK brooding tension that permeates the sound of the album, which many hardcore Hip Hop fans will appreciate.

As a timeline, there will be a preliminary mixshow buzz-single dropping next month, followed by an all-new mixtape entitled I’m Worth Millions in November. The first official single from Spicasso will drop Jan/Feb with the album dropping in the early Spring of 2009. It will feature production by Domingo, Elite, Broadway & Croup and is executive produced top-to-bottom by Tonedeff. Stay tuned for updates.

Mr. SOS – Hip Hop Hippie With A Hammer

Mr. SOS has been around the block more than what would be deemed healthy by any city clinic. As a solo artist, he’s toiled on the underground for years, appeared on The Source Sound Lab’s Unsigned Hype MC Battle, won multiple radio station battles and joined CunninLynguists for their 2nd LP, Southernunderground.

His Mr. SOS For President series of mixtapes (now available on iTunes), were dazzling displays of his lyrical gifts – filled to the brim with witty lines and sick flows all underscored by his keen interest in conspiracy theory and politics gone awry in a post 9-11 America. His plight is against mind control – tracks like “Arrest The President”, “T.H.E.Y.” and his Left Field Radio Podcasts address these topics directly.

One of the more prolific QN5 artists, Mr. SOS released The Pre-Op [EP] which merely hinted at the possibilities of Dr. Strangelove with tracks like the Kno-produced “Welcome To Planet Earth” and “Time”.

Now a father 2-times over, Mr. SOS has an invigorated sense of purpose and insight into the cycle daily life. He’s been working furiously to finish the album for a 2008 release. The album is a sonic tour-de-force ranging from natural serenity to the mechanical doldrums of America in 2008. Much of the album is produced by outside talent, which SOS has combed from around the globe but is kept thematically tight by the simultaneously alert and reflective lyricism.

The first official single from Dr. Strangelove will be released this Fall and with full album scheduled to drop this Winter.
