RE: Do you respect artist and art?
Inspired by Kno’s “Do you respect artist and art“ post and reponses (linked in the last entry by Chris.)
One of the things I think people should keep in mind is that making a record isn’t a science or a math equation. It’s not done until the artist feels it’s done.
If Tone released Archetype when he first had 11-12 of the songs he first planned to use on the album, it would have been a Jazz/boom-bap sound that he would have hated the following year (or week.)
If CL released SU when they first completed all the tracks they had planned to record, Kno wouldn’t have found the sample that lead to “Love Aint” before you guys got to it.
Maybe Pack leaves the original versions of “Excuses” and “I Cant Win.”
And hopefully 3 months after its release, Pack wouldn’t have felt that WDFMS4 needed those changes to give the album a more well-rounded sound. And Kno would have been fine not finding that sample. And hopefully Tone would have been good with “Heads Up”/ “Ridiculous” instead. But I think they are glad that they didn’t drop it when it was “80 %” ready.
Another thing…
Tone hearing what CL is working on is not the same as someone downloading an unfinished version of an artist work.
Kno can trust what Tone has to say because
- They have discussed the goal of said project, so he can trust that Tone understands what Kno is trying to accomplish.
- He knows Tone has the credentials. He’s not some random listener giving an opinion, but a fellow artist. Meaning, he can give an opinion on a work in progress and where to take it. An untrained listener may only know if its “good” or “bad” as a finished piece.
So when 07 rolls around, and tone makes a post saying “yo the new CL shit is hot!” or I tell you that Spicasso “is serious,” know that there’s a lot more to it. Know that these opinions come from people who have been through the process of creating an album and understand where the new piece of music is going, and are impressed. Most importantly, know that the artist involved ASKED for those opinions, because they knew they could trust them and that their music would gain from them.
Peace,
Akolades
