Congrats to Substantial! Even though there was a tight contest for the number one spot for a while there, I think everybody knew that the opposition would be squashed once it became evident that everybody could vote as many times as they pleased.

If this were written “as fairly as possible” you would have actually copy and pasted my extremely thorough responses I posted in threads on your very forums rather than the abridged, ambiguous paragraph on my blog (which I purposely wrote that way to direct the attention here rather than there.)

I love how neither yourself nor “Kno” ever point out that only several minutes later in the show I comment again on the statement in question implying that it was obviously sarcastic and redacting the statement.

The interactions between the host and I are highly edited; please check the 3 quickly chopped up shots in this several second soundbite. It’s MTV, you know how the game goes so quit playing into it. I’m not upset with how they edited it so much as upset with how you have continued to ignore this when it’s so painfully obvious.

The fine print in MTVu’s stipulations for honoring the voting process says any artists whose representatives participate in abuse or even “annoyance” of the shows members are subject to disqualification. Take that as you will.

All of the fans acted of their own accord; I don’t see how we could be construed as “representatives” of QN5.

As for the QN5 artists, they kept all of their commentary solely on the blog, where they have the freedom to express their obvious frustration with the video and your commentary. None of them (as far as I could tell) directly abused you on your blog either, nor did they privately contact you. So, as far as I can tell, QN5 did nothing in the way of “abuse” or “annoyance.

As for private info, easily accessible blogs, myspaces, and facebooks aren’t exactly “private” on the internet.

Wow! I am a high school social studies teacher and as I watched this unfold I was really embarrased by both QN5 fans and Mallory. Apparently both sides are guilty and victims of unfair judgment and immature treatment.

With that being said let me address Mallory: You are a very young woman in a powerful position to influence the success and/or failure of artists who have been on the grind almost as long as you have been alive, and it seems like you show off your influence in a very nonchalant, immature, and condescending way. Your final paragraph stating “fine print” stipulations and saying “take that as you will” seems to suggest that you are taking a few inappropriate comments by disgruntled fans and making it seem like you are some huge victim in order to say “na na na na nah I will show you who will have the last laugh” in a snotty, uppity (and stereotypical) hipster bratty way. That is not mature, and I hope you take your job/position more professionally than to let a few internet posters to ruin a chance for a good artist.

Now, my honest plea to Mallory,

Let’s put this in perspective and move on professionally from here on out.
Substantial is a good artist who I respect as an artist but who also works with inner city kids and makes positive music in a genre that recently has steered inner city kids into bad lifestyle choices. I don’t know how much influence you have over the final voting decision, but if you make a big deal out of this and overturn the voting because of a few idiots, then you are only hurting Substantial. Substantial did not attack you, and he did not ask anybody to attack you personally. Nobody at Qn5 asked anyone to attack you. The internet is full of people who act tougher and more aggressively ignorant behind the computer than in real life, especially towards people in the public eye and you are in that category. Certain Qn5 fans took their request to say how they feel to you in the wrong way. That is WRONG!!

Please don’t punish an innocent artist for a few idiot fans. Let the results stand.

First of all, Tone DID put a link to your forum post which is highlighted in blue above. Also, as to your claim that you explained that you were being sarcastic and then took back your statement, this is what you said:

The fact that you feel like you can just say something so ignorant and then just take it back with a laugh because you actually didn’t like what you originally said you’d prefer in a song just shows that you really don’t think about what you say before you say it. It still makes you look ignorant and, almost as bad, arrogant.

Also, the host goes at the end to you, “So…you’re basically trashing three hip-hop videos. That’s what you’re doing.” And you say with that little pretentious smile, “Mmmm, a little bit, yeah.” It’s obvious that you have little to no respect for the genre…stop trying to make it seem like the things we are offended by in your comment are only a result of MTV’s editing. As Kno said, you’re pretty sensetive to other people’s hate for someone who dishes it out so blindly. If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

As for the whole thing about MTV disqualifying Stan…that would just be a fucking shame, and the fact that you would support that makes me have even less respect.

For a while I started to empathize with Mallory for her immature stance on this whole matter. However, a comment like that, coupled with a quick manipulation of the rules because her feelings were upset really dashed that notion in my mind.

Whether or not you redacted or retracted your statement by saying that another video was worse was moot. If I were to say to my girlfriend, “Caitlyn you are a giant whore, you smell like wet meat, and look like you came straight out of Tremors, I’d rather a hideously deformed person that smells like raw sewage” only to see my new “dream girl” to find out she is worse than I imagined, that wouldn’t change what I said. You can’t retract a statement centered around a piece of art and then draw comparisons to later pieces of art. Art is meant to be standalone, I’m sorry you don’t understand that.

Oh and since Chris and Kno posted before I was done writing mine…

Chris: I agree…I was one of the fans who said some pretty harsh things. No death threats, but I gave pretty harsh criticism of Mallory and her lifestyle…I later apologized to her for certain things I said. I still feel that she is an immature and ignorant girl, but some of us did let this get out of hand. You layed it out eloquently an I agree almost in full.

I’m in no way being aggressive about this just in case you’re unsure Mallory, but which bit of this obviously implied you were being sarcastic? It implies to me that you made a general sweeping and rather silly statement (possibly realised at the time it wasn’t the smartest thing to say) and then realised that the very thing you said you’d rather see was actually terrible, leading me to assume that you are very particular about your music taste or just don’t like rap (aside from the impressive mentions of Common and Q-tip on the forums – you’re obviously aware that an ‘underground’ scene exists).

Anyway, the fact is I for one was offended by your statement, regardless of you ‘redacting’ it minutes later. Unfortunately for you, it was a stupid thing you said on a spur of the moment just as if I were to say on TV “I hate niggers” and then minutes later respond with “no, you don’t get it, it was sarcasm!”. This has been blown well out of proportion though and I feel it’s been taken too far. Perhaps it will at least serve you as a lesson that you have to be careful of what you say in life and in this case about what is a sensitive issue.

As for Substantial not getting what he rightly deserves, that wouldn’t be a very sportsmanlike way to handle the situation.. infact, I have a feeling it would make things quite worse.

Anyway, back to voting…

These actions are highly reminiscent of a pre-schooler who starts a game and then begins to change the rules when it becomes apparent that the child will not get what he wants. These immature actions should be left to the children. It seems to me that you’re obviously new to this kind of attention Mallory and have never heard of or recieved this kind of backlash. When you go on to generalize an entire genre of hip-hop (in the very Mecca of the hip-hop genre no less) you have to expect these things to occur. Movie critics like Roger Ebert recieve similar criticisms on their character all the time for movies they review. Here’s an example:

I would also like to point out that the QN5 record label has no control over what fans say to you Mallory, and to disqualify Substantial after winning fair and square is not only a reflection of your own personal character but also shows your maturity. In short I can only ask that you grow up and learn to choose your words more carefully, these are people’s careers that you are affecting with these largely ignorant, grossly biased, and insensitive statements that you make.

I woula also like to point out that that hip-hop has almost (if not already has) become a subculture in this country and goes a lot deeper than “gats and guns.” Hip-hop is a rich and diverse musical style portraying the different views of people from all walks of life. It’s not something that you can just insult easily and not expect criticism and like Chris requested of you; let the results stand. Substantial has been working hard for years and has done nothing to you personally to deserve losing something he rightfully deserves. If anything, doing that will incite even more attacks on you through the internet, especially with Kno’s great foresight with taking the screenshots. Let it stand and just be mindful of what you say in the future.

I think mallory loves the attention and is just trying to milk this to make herself look important. Why is it that you americans have to over react to things and take things soooooooo far! Mallory should just grow up. She is never ever going to be a music guru because she does not have an open mind to music. Why did they get a girl who is like OMG FYI THIS EMO MUSIC IS LIKE SO COOL!

Because even a person as daffy as Mallory can either cause a setback in, or even derail a career, in this country. What you must understand is that words have power and influence; it happens every single day. I’ve been passed up in promotions at my job by total idiots.

The reaction to her words may have been a bit extreme (I feel it’s because the true QN5 fans understand that this label and its artists have taken their lumps for a long time, and deserve any opportunity they get-they truly work hard and deserve it), they understood that this situation is more serious than you think it is. You don’t know how this competition can affect things for Substantial, or the QN5 label.

I have absolutely zero power over the rules MTV created. I didn’t check them until yesterday and had no clue they changed it. I have not spoken to one MTV representative (I swear to this) and nor have they contacted me. I can only assume they saw this webpage when they went to announce the winner and were set back by the lengthy personal attacks against one of their affiliates.

I can only assume the reason the voting has been extended is due to the fact that MTVu is semi-shut down for the summer. All the shows we filmed early Spring and no one is there during this time to my knowledge.

Hmmm. If you’re telling the truth, then that may be the most reasonable thing I’ve heard you say yet, Mal. Seems a but convenient to me though. Whatever…we’ll just vote Stan into #1 again.

Look Mallory, you are entitled to your opinion on Stan’s video, I guess the thing that is most disturbing about this for me, is how comfortable you are with the stereotypical image of black people that is expressed in a lot of rap videos nowadays. The extent of your comfort with that image is so deep that it appears that when something counters that image, you are repelled by it. I see first hand everyday, the effect that these images have on black youth, these kids transform the fantasy portrayed in the videos and in a larger extent the music and attempt to make it a reality. So a lot of the stuff that these “gat and gun” (pretty redundant if you ask me) touting studio gangsters say on wax becomes tangible (mysogiony, violence, rabid materialism, drug use and dealing…………). I’m not expecting you to change your proclivities in hip hop, but understand that the same gat and gun stuff that appeals to you is being translated in VERY real way on the streets and there is NOTHING good about that especially when it’s you, your family and friends dealing with the consequences of it everyday.

If no one is around, then no one can change the rules because they’re not around. If something is semi-shut down, I would assume that means there is little maintenance to be done to the rules and website as opposed to the EXACT OPPOSITE that we have on our hands here.

Okay, I am reading some of these comments and I think we got the point across, call off the hounds, I mean we aint juggalos people. But if it’s one thing at least they could say QN5 has a very passionate fanbase. I think we took off our “too many rappers” hat and put on our “fan” hats for a good cause of getting Stan some exposure. This is not how we as blueschoolers (okay I don’t neccessarily like the blueschoolers name) but as a QN5 fan I don’t think this is not how we want to break into the mainstream biz, if that’s what we want to do.
