Substantial Comes In @ #1 by the deadline!
This means we won!

As of 11:59 EST on Friday July 11, 2008, Substantial’s “It’s You (I Think)” was the #1 voted video on MTVu’s The Freshmen. As stipulated on their rules, this officially concludes voting for this contest. We’d like to thank EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU who took time out of their day’s and clicked your asses off in order to show your support for QN5 and secure a victory for the video.

We haven’t received official confirmation from MTVu as of 5:10 pm, (it’s still #1 – see here) and the voting mechanism still seems to be functional, but as you can see, we won fair & square as stipulated by the official rules. I’m not anticipating anything but good things.

Mallory Responds…

Mallory's Blog...

For those of you who responded to the Don’t Let Mallory Win! blog that was posted yesterday, I’d like to shed light on all sides of the issue as fairly as possible and let you see what’s going on. Apparently, Mallory was inundated with responses from fans from all over the world regarding her comments about the song and has responded with her own blog.

Death Threats, Legal Action & Blacklisting? Huh?

Most recently, Mallory posted on her own blog:

So my comments option is temporarily frozen so that none may be deleted. This is due to potential legal action being taken against a certain label as their staff members have agglomerated and released my personal contact information to their fans for dissing one of their artists on MTV. Both the label’s representatives and their artists have sent me death threats that have increasingly called for serious attention. Unfortunately all this has probably done has been to ensure that their unfortunate break-out star and related artists will suffer in future attempts to utilize MTVu and affiliates.

Hmmm. Legal action? Blacklisting? Um…nah.

Instead, I’ll allow Kno’s response to her forum post to do the talking on this one, as he put it more eloquently than I can right now:

I’m Kno, producer of the track. If you feel like being an on-air art critic on a Viacom-owned channel catering to young adults, you had better become more aware of the age-old rule of broadcast media : The mic is always hot, the camera is always on and anything can become a soundbite.

You also need to be able to take your lumps. Nobody is offended you “hated” the song, they are offended about the self-aggrandizing, pretentious way you went about explaining yourself…edit or not. The other two girls on the panel seemed to carry themselves with much more class and humbleness than you did. Its quite apparent you think of yourself as clever, but real life dictates that not everyone is going to agree with you.

You claim you were cut up to your detriment, but based on the host’s question “So you’re not a fan of pos-rap?” and your subsequent nodding in agreement, I fail to eat your explanation 100%. Add onto that your amusement at the “N” word, jokes about “Black beautiful women” and other such non-sequiturs on your blog, and I’m just not sold on you being anything other than what you presented yourself as during that show.

Even if I did, it doesn’t change the fact that nobody here “scoured 100’s of pages on the internets” for your info. It took “Mallory + MTVu” to produce your Myspace and subsequent blog. If you can’t do that you aren’t Googling yourself right.

You seemed to have no issue with members of indie rock bands and their fans fawning over your defense of them on your MTVu show, so why be shocked and appalled when the opposite happens?

Nobody from “QN5 Music” sent you death threats, nobody told the fans to. If they did? Sue them. Press charges. Whatever it is people of your ilk do in these situations. Nobody gave out private info that wasn’t available in 15 seconds on any search engine. My advice would be to make it all private if you aspire to be in the public eye, and spend more time giving thoughtful, rational opinion during your “job” rather than spending your time trying to come off witty and edgy. Unless you’re putting in your pitch to be a real VJ, in which case get ready for people to hate your guts. A little internet-chop-busting is nothing compared to what you’ll deal with then.

Peace!
Kno

Nice response, señor Knolan.

Match Point – Rallying In The Face of Opposition

So, with all of this said and done, we’re still awaiting a response to from MTVu regarding the official inclusion of the “It’s You” video into rotation, as we’ve rallied in the face of opposition to win fair & square. YOU all took time out of your day, YOU voted, YOU responded and did exactly what MTVu asked you to… YOU voted as many times as possible for your favorite video to win. And we won – fair & square

Stay tuned.

Hollerate!
