[VIDEO] Poison Pen - “BK Fat Boy” (Directed By Kevin Chung)
What’s good people! I just wanted to take a quick time-out from all this Megashow insanity to let you know that longtime QN5-affiliate Poison Pen is set to release his debut album The Money Shot on August 4th. I don’t normally shill for releases on other labels, but this cat is like family to me. Luckily, the dude’s resume reads like a hip hop War & Peace and he’s a talented bastard to boot, so I won’t have to do much convincing.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Hip Hop Woolly Mammoth, we advise you check out his verse on “Obligatory Posse Cut” from Happy F*ck You Songs “Stoopid” (which I produced) off of Asterisk:Three or “Oh Snap!” with Session on Asterisk:Four and Immortal Technique’s “Peruvian Cocaine”.
“The Mayor”
I’ve often referred to Pen as “The Mayor”, simply because no matter where you go on the hip hop scene… this dude is there. You’ll see him in Oslo Norway in the morning and then at a show in Brooklyn by midnight parlaying with the entire club. The dude is a walking testament to omnipresence and hustle and a veritable linchpin of the New York scene. I know I’m not the only artist who feels that way. It makes me all the more proud that he’s been an avid supporter of the QN5 movement since day one.
Pen was (and still is) a regular at all the shows and open mics I frequented when I started making the rounds. I met him through Pack and I was always impressed with the kid, cause he was dirty with the punches off the top and had this extremely likable big-bully persona that you couldn’t help but root for. The type of cat that would literally chuckle while hammer-fisting someone’s face in (I’ve seen him do this) and then hang with crackin’ jokes at the bar right after. A showman in every sense.
With an unmistakable voice, an ultra-thick Brooklyn-drawl and a knack for instantly memorable “fuck you” hooks – this is the type of shit you won’t be embarrassed playing in front of your boys on the way to the dive bar for a night of incidents you won’t remember the next morning. The chick next to you won’t remember either. And you most likely won’t know who she is either. But for the lyric-whores like myself, I advise y’all to take the time out to comb through the lyrics, and you’ll be rewarded with gems like “You’re fucking dead! Like Necrophiliacs”.
Burger Battle
I remember battling Pen back when I first got to NYC for some Internet video Breez Evahflowin was doing. The kicker is that it was ‘fast-food’ themed, and we had to battle in front of a McDonalds off West 4th Street. We affectionately nicknamed it “The Burger Battle”. Never saw any tape, and I don’t think Breez ever did anything with it, but I do remember placing a french fry on Pen’s shoulder and calling him “A Fry Guy”. I believe the term “Black Grimace” was used as well. It’s pretty much all a blur at this point, but I remember it was fucking hilarious. Breez, if you’re reading this…YouTube that shit already. I want to see myself in a 4XL Ecko Tee and Size 38 baggy jeans again.
THE MONEY SHOT
The Money Shot is essentially Poison Pen’s Archetype. He’s released several mixtapes and EP’s but never a proper full length album. I’ve been hearing the title for years. I’ve watched him grind harder than anyone I know over the years and it’s a beautiful thing to finally see him release this puppy. I attended the listening party recently at Chun King studios and I can safely say that this is one of the best hardcore Hip Hop albums you’ll hear this year. The sheer amount of contorted faces I witnessed firsthand in reaction to these tracks was proof positive I wasn’t alone in this opinion.
The album features appearances by M.O.P., Immortal Technique, Gillie da Kid and Silkk The Shocker and RIDICULOUS production by DJ Static, JJ Brown, J-Zone, and yours truly. I’m not even gonna tell you which song…I know you’ll know when you hear it.
So, if you love good ole’ grimy Brooklyn bounce and hard-knock anthems with personality, Poison Pen’s The Money Shot comes highly recommended. Hell, peep a show next time he’s around your way. Get that man a drink! The album is available now for pre-order at Best Buy, so be sure to show love and support BedStuy’s favorite son before the pillow you’re sleeping under suffocates you.
