General Discussion crushing blow to hd dvd

i read about that Friday. Toshiba is still saying, “nah, son! we ain’t goin’ nowhere…” but with that happening, I can’t see Paramount playing the HD side much longer. this was the kind of development I was waiting for. fortunately for me, wifey’s gonna be coppin’ me a PS3 once she gets caught up on some other bills, so i’ll be steppin into the HD movie world in about a month.

Microsoft fucked up with the whole HD DVD thing. I think the 360 is better than the PS3, but they seriously messed up with the video formats. With that said though I dont see that much difference from regular DVDs to HD DVDs or Blu Ray. There is a huge difference to me from regular to HD TV but I just dont see it in dvds.

i don’t see how microsoft fucked up. they gave buyers the option to upgrade to an unproven format rather than force it in as a standard. 20/20 hindsight tells us that’s pretty much why Bluray toppled HD DVD, but i appreciate not having to spend $100 more on a console for a DVD player that, like you said, doesn’t display a significant difference between standard definition to high definition.

Agreed - if it’s not coming from a straight digital source or captured on HD video. Which is why I’m curious to see Ratatouille on BRD.

When Pixar made the jump from VHS to DVD, they literally RE-RENDERED Toy Story & Bugs Life for DVD, so that it was a direct digital-to-digital transfer of the movie. Most movies are still shot on 35MM film, transferred digitially, edited, and then sent back out as films to most theaters. Hence why they still look like shit @ all the theaters that are too cheap to pony up for digital projectors.

I don’t own an HDTV, but I just picked up a BRD burner for the manor. But I’ve seen some BRD stuff at best buy and everything looks grainy as shit.

Personally, I’d like to see BRD become the defacto standard, simply because it’s a superior format, storage-wise.

Hollerate.

Yea the whole hindsight is 20/20 thing applies here but from the start it looked as if Blu Ray was going to win. Sony is way deeper into the movie industry than Microsoft has ever been. Not to mention the inclusion of a Blu Ray player in the PS3 is the only thing saving Blu Ray. From what I’ve heard people are just buying a PS3 and not a blu ray player since its a lot cheaper and you get a game console at the same time.

It seems as if Microsoft never fully committed to this new format besides making their peripheral HD DVD player. They should have at least released a bundle that included one with 2 movies or something with a 360.

With all that said I read that Microsoft really wants BOTH formats to fail so digital downloads will take over. If we go all digital, then Microsoft has the upper hand big time.

Sorry for the double post but yours came late. I have an HD TV here and get the HD package from our cable company and I’ve noticed that all HD channels look ridiculously grainy when viewed up close. From what I’ve seen in electronics stores all those displays are in tight quarters so you are close to the TV. I’ve always heard that to truly get the effects of a HD or big screen TV you need to be X amount of feet away depending on how large the TV is.

I’ve never seen Blu Ray in action but so far Planet Earth, Syriana, and Bourne Identity are way better on HD than regular DVD. This was on the Toshiba A35 player but I’m not just rationalizing my purchase….or maybe I am.

Warner’s sister company New Line also went Blu Ray exclusive
Bluray for the win

can’t speak for all stores, but some stores don’t set up their HD display with actual HD equipment which results in shitty displays

some companies have also been lazy to actually do good transfers for the new HD formats

either way I think videophiles with their top of the line equipment will care more than regular people will

LOL. A few weeks back it was still reportedly neck and neck. I’ve read Pro-HD DVD articles that pulled out numbers about HD DVD units selling more than Blu Ray units. What they didn’t average in was the number of PS3’s sold with Blu Ray units installed. I think HD DVD has sold about 200,000 more standalone players than Bluray (pre-Holiday season). But when you count in PS3’s, and then XBox 360 HD DVD add-ons, Bluray’s got the lead by about 700,000 more players in people’s homes.

But like I said, I was in no rush for the hd dvd player. One of the formats is basically becoming more of a brick now. It’s guaranteed that HD DVD players will drop drastically, and the movies will hit clearance racks before the production companies re-distribute their flicks in Bluray.

As for the difference between HD TV receivers and standard definition networks, I do notice the difference. Especially when you look at channels like Fox, and even ESPN. It seems like Comedy Central, FX, and VH1/MTV shows are filmed with better cameras, so some of the shows don’t look too bad. Most of em look like really good 480i, almost 720i.

My question though, for you HD aficionados… if I’m watching a movie on HBO HD, is it really just standard DVD quality being broadcast through the signal into my home, or is it actual High Definition as if I had an HD DVD player playin the flick. I know this goes back to the old statement about the quality of the camera filming, but sometimes I just can’t tell, and don’t know if it’s my untrained eye being impressed by low quality standard definition.

i choose blu ray because it’s three less syllables then hd dvd
it’s a time saver

damnit i bought an xbox 360, now instead of paying the extra hundy for the dvd player I’m just gonna spend 4 and get the PS3.

I just like to say I have been down with PS3 from the start.

That being said the difference between HD and standard isnt simply the picture, but the sound clairity and quality. But visualy, the Departed on BRDVD allows you to see the individual whiskers on Jack Nicholsons face, which means for some of you (tone) you will be able to count the pubes on an HD vagina. I just want this war, like other wars, to end so we can start paying less for the movies.

and that Seahawks game looked amazing in hi def.

I eagerly anticipate the day I can bask in the glory of Hi-Def pornography.

This is Sony’s revenge for the VHS/Betamax war.

yeah i figure whichever a lot of pornography is in will probably get a large boost.

didn’t porn dictate the winner in something similiar to this a while back?

51GB HD DVD disc gets official

In a strange turn of events, Blu-ray discs are outselling HD DVDs, and now the HD DVD format has taken the lead in capacity—who would’ve think it? Toshiba just announced that it has successfully created a triple-layer disc with 17GB per layer, which amounts to 51GB, a full GB more than those dual-layer Blu-ray discs can muster.

blu-ray isnt even a finalized standard, anybody that bought a stand alone blu-ray player is holding a paperweight. all of the features that they are promising in their blu-ray 2.0 profile have been readily available on HDDVD from the start.

no sides just facts.

besides I borrow all of my WMVHD from the internet Smile 720p or 1080p with DTS 5.1 etc. etc. Very Happy

You kidding me? Porn is all ABOUT the detail. Smile

...so what does this mean for my HD TV and 100+ regular DVD’s??

Your 100+ dvds will still look nice, assuming the image can be upscaled to 1080i on either a BRDVD or HDDVD player, although, it will still look nowhere near a native HD quality movie (whether Blu-Ray or HD-DVD).

by the way

The porn industry wasn’t the reason VHS bested Betamax. People like to claim it had a major impact on the outcome because it makes for an interesting discussion.

me and my several hundred dvds ain’t goin nowhere!

actually you are wrong. The availibility of vhs recorders, camcorders and the cheap duplication allowed for an industry to boom. Historians and economists would disagree with you. The difference now is that the internet has hurt sales of porn in vhs and dvd form.

as for everything non hd, it will be obsolete in the next 5 years, so sell now and pick a side before what you have has no value at all.
