General Discussion crushing blow to hd dvd

You guys are saying you don’t like Blu-ray cuz it looks TOO nice?

Everything I’ve seen on it looks amazing. Dark Knight… Concerts… UP…

I think some of the issues you mention may be due to “motion smoothing” on your TV, maybe?

Not Blu-Ray’s fault. Don’t bwame poor wittle Bwu-Way. Stop bullying.

Yeah, I think they’re talking about “Soap Opera Effect” aka shit looks like a home video you shot in your backyard. But I agree, it’s probably the TVs fault for jamming in extra frames where they don’t exist.

yea its the auto motion (e.g., your tv is set to 120, 240, or 480hz. Some movies (animated ones especially) look dope with it, but other ones make shit look fake as hell. Film is supposed to trick your eye and the auto motion lessens that effect.

Basically a combination of all the things said above me is why I don’t watch everything on Blu-ray. I’m too lazy to optimize my TV also.

There’s also the grandpa/hipster in me that enjoys his 35mm prints and film grain.

My guess is that no one wants to buy three copies of a movie if they have a PS3 for Blu-Ray, a DVD player on their laptop, and an iPad that won’t play either. It’s about accommodating the new ideal for common, at-home devices while keeping customers happy for not buying multiple copies. Also, if you only have 1 of 3, or 2 of 3, and plan to upgrade to all three, it’s nice to have it readily available. Why buy a DVD if there’s a chance you’ll get a Blu-Ray player soon for only a $7 difference?

Besides, if they don’t include the digital copy, we’re more inclined to shrink the DVD ourselves and encode it for playback on our devices—which means higher probability for piracy, as if it wouldn’t exist regardless.

As for my experience with Blu-Ray, I’ve absent-mindedly built my collection over the years and have around 100. I stopped counting. I doubled up on some movies I own on DVD, such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. The differences aren’t noticeable to me, but I like spending frivolously. I also need to upgrade my TV, but that’s happening when I move.

Warner Bros and other places finally started doing what I wanted 3-4 years ago: trade-in options. Think the site was dvd2blu.com? Regardless, your choices are limited, but it’s a choice nonetheless.

^before you trade in your DVD’s make sure they’re not rare out of print versions, check ebay to see how much they’re going for. Some are rare collectibles like if you have the Criterion copy of Salo that shits like $500 mane.

I’ve had some blu ray movies look really amazing and others look like utter shit. I like how most of the new movie releases now have blu ray, dvd and digital all in one package.

good point! I guess it makes sense then and would be good to have all 3 formats.

justified marketing (logically that is). Amen’s point + people see “oh shit i get 3 for the price of one?” [insert “time cop” reference from south park].

lol. I was about to start buying the 3D + Blu-Ray + DVD + Digital Copy flicks for the same reason for when I finally decide to upgrade to a 3D TV.
