Hey, im looking to buy some new headphones to listen to music while im at my computer and my new laptop. i already have some etymotic er6i’s earphones for when im on the go, but want to invest in some of those nice big headphones. i know alot about earphones and such, but not headphones since i’ve never really owned a pair.
i was at best buy the other day and they had beats by dr. dre headphones up on display, and they were way expensive for the price, all name. i saw some other ones on display such as bose as well. after that, i posted on another forum for recommendations, and did a lot of research based on that and read a shitload of reviews on amazon. sennheiser seems like the most popular for headphones. i narrowed down my search to the sony mdr-7506(got alot of good reviews), the sennheiser hd-555, sennheiser hd-595, and, akg k240s, and then people recommended more and more different brands so its very hard to decide. and i found a lot of other headphones with just as good reviews as well.
im looking to spend $250 max maybe more if its worth it, and mostly be used for hip-hop (QN5 majority) , and indie rock, post rock etc..
what do you guys recommend, especially tonedeff and kno, and any other producers on QN5 since you guys are the pros, and know what sounds good for YOUR MUSIC, since my library is a lot of qn5, and my most enjoyable music is qn5.. i’d appreciate feedback!
my only requirements are, that they have to be comfortable, cause i know a lot of headphones squeeze your head tight but DJs use them since they help prevent them from falling off. ill be listening to most the music chillaxing, and for a good few hours at a time.
also, i wont be using an amp for it, just plug straight into my laptop or desktop, or my ipod and iaudiox5 from time to time. i read lots of reviews, and alot of headphones (the higher end ones) require a headphone amp to really get the best out of it. at this point, i dont know much about that, so i rather not have to deal with that, and just stick to headphones only.
My second pair of headphones (after some kosses that broke every other month) and they’ve been awesome. Captures all the frequencies without muddling the bass while maintaining that “warm” sound to it. It can handle at the QN5 and Mogwai I throw at them! Also, I wear them for extended periods of time and they never feel uncomfortable; I forget they’re even on. They don’t need an amp or anything like that. Plus, it’s $100 cheaper than your budget too, so you can spend the extra money on more music!
For what it’s worth, I’d recommend the Sony MDR-7506. If I recall, Pack was using them in the FMakalishus documentary. You won’t need a headphone preamp for it, and has a flat response. I use them in my engineering classes and am pleased with them. They’re industry standards apparently.
*edit* the Sony headphones are also 1/4” and 1/8” input so you can plug em into all your devices *edit*
If not, Sennheiser doesn’t fail and gives you a bit more of a “warm” sound, which people like.
I’d say it depends though. What type of music you listen to, what type of sound you want out of your headphones, etc.
Amazing. I was just thinking yesterday that I needed to dig around for good headphones. This was after hearing some sounds in “Doin’ Alright” that I hadn’t noticed before. Perfect timing, onilink.
but yea, those denons look really good. everyone said they are extremely comfortable in the reviews. between them and the sonys, and the sennheisers and the akgk240s.
I got these years ago, and even though I’ve had to replace the connecting cable cord three times, I love them with all my heart. Basically, I’ve mixed everything I’ve done on them since I started the label. I hate that they don’t make these anymore though…I’m vexed that I have to get new ones.
These are the exact pair I have at the moment, my roomate had an extra pair and gave them to me. I think they are great for mixing, and are definitely very comfortable to wear, but for some reason for *just* enjoying listening to music, I dislike listening to music with them. I’m not sure why.
How about you can borrow them as long as you want if you send me everything finished from Chico & The Man? That sounds fair to me.

I definitely appreciate the offer! They’re working dandily at the moment. If anything goes horribly wrong… If I borrowed them…I’d just steal them. lol I gotta get new ones anyway.
i just got recommended the Beyerdynamic DT770pro (80ohm) headphones from a head-fi forum, im looking into those right now. apparently they are very comfy and good for all genres of music.
All I own & buy are Sennheisers. Even for my ipod…I immediately chuck the ipod phones and buy Sennheiser ear buds (which I’ve had to do twice now since my previous ipod, buds and all, was stolen over a year ago).
I’m thinking of getting another pair too for my office and taking the ones I have now home. (I usually only listen to music on my ipod or at the office.) I’m thinking of the HD-555’s. For the price they’re currently at, it’s insane!!
I got mine for $200. They come and go on amazon. But if you are listen primary to music though the headsets; then its an investment worth making. And honestly I think that outside of speaker systems; Bose is completely overrated. There headsets are poorly made and the sound is meh.
I use a pair of sony mdr-v700…I use them for all my Dj Sets, Production Mixing, I plug em Into the MPC, and everyday listening. They have a comfortable fit and even they are supposed to be for “Dj Mixing” Theyre not too tight to wear for hours while listening to or making music. Also, me and Tone, strangely enough, had this conversation over a pipe smoke, and some vintage brandy in our smoking jackets, arguing over who would be the first to compose a song accurately deciphering the musical notation and hieroglyphic images in 5 Paul Klee Paintings… unfortunately while contesting this he threw the glove down and challenged me to a duel before we could even discuss more highbrow things like old school porn stars, and who had the best meat wallet, Heather Hunter or Vanessa Del Rio. I was to contest that Ms. Del Rio had a box that looked like hammered whale shit, or Rejected Arby’s Roast Beef, but alas, I had already run from the duel. We did agree that these Headphones ere indeed the best for everyday use and comfort. (you said you wanted QN5 input so…there you have it, Tone will no doubt attest that every word in my story is accurate, save the part about Ms. Del Rio…really never got to that, dog.) Them shits are nice, though, fo rella, don’t touch my chinchilla.

I stayed in DC for a few months 2.5 years ago. Realizing that laptop speakers or buds were simply not going to meet my listening needs, I prepared by shopping for headphones. It was down to these, and a pair by Sony.
I got these. Albums I A/B’d (do you still call it A/Bing when it’s the monitors you’re switching, and not the track? anyway.) in making my decision: APOS, WDFMS4? (and two other non-QN5 discs).
Probably not the flattest response; actually they run a bit warm. But the sound is delicious.
Grado SR-60s are virtually the best head phones money can buy in the hundred dollar range. I’ve tried so many and none have had the same type of sound quality I hear from them..
Only con is that they’re open so everyone around you can hear what you’re listening to which is a pretty big con in my opinion but the sound quality outweighs the bad stuff.
i bought the beyerdynamic dt 770 pro 80s, i got them yesterday and love them
i learned alot about headphones after reading a shitload on headfi forums, and got led to these. they are perfect to me so far, and hopefully will sound even better with burn in.
i will probably get a portable headphone amp as well in the coming months.
On the Bose issue, I have a pair of Quiet Comfort 2’s and the build quality is a bit shabby. The edges of the headband are starting to tear a bit and there’s a weird tapping noise when they’re playing at a certain angle (I’m sure somebody knows what that is). They also don’t sound anywhere near as good as when I first got them a few years ago. Luckily I got them cheap from my uncle.
Otherwise they’re great sounding headphones and comfortable.
I know these aren’t what you are looking for but I got these on Amazon on sale for like 30$, and they sound amazing. I haven’t had any high end headphones but these are great! They are collapsible too, so great for someone on the go…
