Chico And The Man Possible clues within My Lady?

I’m at school right now, so I can’t check this.. and for some reason I’m so anxious to post it I took a stop by the library.

So I got My Lady playing loud in the car this morning on my way to school and within the first second there’s a voice very quietly saying something. It might be something from the previous track fading out and overlapping into the track, or it might not. I have another version of the song from a “Future Releases” disc that isn’t mixed.. and there’s the version on the CATM MySpace.. but point is, there’s a very quiet voice saying a short phrase within the first second of My Lady.

I shall drop it in Cool Edit and try to figure it out when I get home.

Peace

*walks to anthropology to take a nap*

Hmmm…it sounds like “mission” but it’s too hard to tell…

My first thought was that it says “don’t miss it” but it sounds like the first word, or if it is one word, starts with a “th” sound.. It might not even be English.

Not sure about the beginning…but I think it’s pretty safe to say this song somehow relates to death, seeing as how the lyrics in both verses are “bidding adieu” to the “lady(ies)”.

After hearing it over and over “no remission” also strikes me as a possibility…

(From Wikipedia) Remission may refer to:

* Remission (medicine), the state of absence of disease activity in patients with a chronic illness, with the possibility of return of disease activity
* Re-Mission, a video game for young people with cancer
* In theology, “remission” is the forgiveness of sin.
* In penology, “remission” refers to the reduction of a prison sentence.

Just peeped it with the headphones.

It’s an echo from the end of the previous track.. Tone saying “Chico & The Man”.. the echo is “o and the man chi” fading out.. Sounded different in the car.

haha, damn…that’s disappointing.

Here’s the lyrics taken from an old thread provided by Subzero with edits from DWilli & myself.

My Lady said:My lady

[V1]
So regal, beautiful
Too bad I’ll never see the funeral
And even through the doom and gloom
As soon as the moon can be viewed in full
I saw a star in the heavens
I knew it was you, my anxiety is through the roof
Can

Maybe “she and I collid[ing]” is referring to colliding with the Siren, whatever it may be.

This was from January ‘08 but I still feel like sticking to some of this after a long time:

This is a good theory. I have a couple of my own…

-His mother died when he was young, perhaps while giving birth or just after (he’s “alive in lieu of [his mother]”) and if that’s the case, maybe the same happens to his wife…this probably doesn’t hold up though because he says “i can barely remember you tucking me in” so she’d have to be alive at some point during his life.

-Or going along with your theory, perhaps his dad was responsible for his mom’s death and he will do the same

-His father and mother got into fights and she “saw her chance” to take her own life, I’m assuming. Perhaps he is going to do the same to himself rather than kill his wife.

Something else I was thinking was the narrator puts his mother on sort of a pedestal and the girlfriend never has a chance to live up to that even though she is compared favorably for most of the verse. Once she betrays the narrator (“sneaky slyness” of having the kid), he takes some sort of drastic measure whether that is murder or suicide, etc. Also the pots and pans line might point to domestic abuse and the narrator would rather go through with whatever drastic measure (“colliding”) than put his kid through what he went through.

Also on the lyrics I think it should be “take a knee for Her Highness” as in the narrator proposes to her. The weird part is everything seems fine between the two up until that point. Obviously the whole switch from pedestal to colliding has to do with the kid being born and why she “has no idea what tonight is.” Perhaps the “singing sirens” just represent him being tempted by other women or other things and he won’t be able to handle having a kid which basically throws his life into family mode even though it doesn’t seem like he endorsed that.

The last theory I have is the whole song has a happy ending and “what tonight is” means that the narrator, the woman, and the kid form a complete family and that’s what he was missing his entire life. But that doesn’t explain the collide part.

Gotdamn Jimson, you should teach a college course.

Miss Lady 101

going on the whole batista and cuban revolution concept which was brought up in the other threads

the lady that tone is talking about in the first verse could be cuba. it was his home until he left. he would be looking back

So regal, beautiful
Too bad I’ll never see the funeral
And even through the doom and gloom
As soon as the moon can be viewed in full
I saw a star in the heavens
I knew it was you, my anxiety is through the roof

Thanks! Just adding some ideas to the other thoughtful theories out there. I’m sure I’ll be dead wrong once the album drops. Speculation is helping the wait though. Both My Lady and Miss Lady are good songs
Wink

Also I like the Cuba theory a lot.

Yeah, the Cuba theory sounds too solid to be incorrect, at least completely. Especially with the Cuban Revolution shenanigans from twitter.

This is something I’ve been hearing lately in the background of the second verse that seems odd to me.

It happens in a few 20 second intervals, right at the end of 2:03, then again at 2:23 & 2:43.. it’s on the right side in the background and sounds like a short yell that’s most noticable at 2:23..

It might just be some part of the music, but it’s an odd sound if you ask me.

His mother committed suicide, in my opinion. This is supported by:
“Too bad I’ll never see the funeral.”
I’d assume, since those who commit suicide are not allowed funerals, this explains his mother’s death.
“Saw your chance so I guess you took it.”
Speaks for itself.

Also, my theory at explaining the last couple lines is as follows:

Tone’s girl is pregnant. She begins giving birth early. An ambulance is called(sirens). Tone’s girl dies due to complications (“bid her adieu”). Tone’s new child is a girl (“as she and I collide”) and this child now becomes his lady.

i don’t think her mother committed suicide but maybe she died giving him birth thats why he couldnt see the funeral and that would also explain “Can

tone, help us to figure out the meaning of “My Lady”

who do you collide with? the child? the women? your mother?

Issasecret.

We will know sooner or later..

something to do with what tone says on 1st verse of “Fear”?
“Since I nearly lost my life and my wife in a taxi”

still a mistery!

Probably not. I don’t think anything he’s done outside of Chico and the Man stuff is going to be hints towards this project. If anything it will be more of a coincidence. IMO.

Is it just me or does it sound like there’s something in spanish during the chorus? You can hear it in the beginning as well as the very end of the song. Sounds like “arriogo” but from what I’ve been able to find, there is no such word except in the context of a name. Maybe I’m hearing it wrong, or it’s just not spanish or…. I have no idea.

it sounds like “are you gone?” or something like that..

i tried my best. its not 100% but this is wat i got

Chico and the Man-My Lady

V1
so regal, Beautiful.
Too bad ill never see
the funeral.
And even through the
doom and gloom
as soon as the moon can
be viewed in full.
i saw a star in the heavens.
I knew it was you.
My Anxiety is through the roof.
Cant deny the irrefutable truth.
That I’m alive in lieu of you.
and the silence of your tomb
i hear your cries as you’re consumed
your spirit rides illuming under the
Twenty-Thousand hues of blue.
Fade Out.
Zoom in.
I Felt your heart as i grew in you womb
The Constant Bass is sooth in tune.
I drew from you like still lights.
Was still born with room to move.
i’d use in pursuit of my roots.
I would later be groomed to lose.
Last June i Tattooed the date in
numerals under my chin.
The last place ever touched by your
skin.
Guess something within loves to pretend
that you’re my mother again.
Though i barely remember you tucking me in.
There’s a constant nagging.
my subconscious acting up.
thoughts thats drawn from the past
constant racking of pots and pans.
up in the kitchen cooking
mom dad arguing again.
saw your chance and so i guess
you took it.
you had the heart to match the
strongest hands that god can
grant a women.
Carried the term but never saw
the man your son is.
And sometimes i cant confront it.
Im asking what id give to be you.
But as dawn advances i bid you adieu.
my..

Chorus
my lady

( I know you can still hear.
youd be proud huh?
ive done alot.
i met this beautiful, beautiful Woman.
she reminds me of you.)

V2

so radiant, Vibrant.
hazel tint in her eyes
and the way her skin shines is
like a phoenix rising.
even i could be surprised if we entwine
ill feel the climate reach its highest peek
when shes besides me.
But we got deeper ties than physical needs,
desire.
typically we aspire to dream and climb the
steepest heights that we can find.
And better redefine the cheapened lives we seek
and find.
And theres a reason to bind together.
though sometimes i tell some teeny lies
to feed her pride and sleep between her thighs.
My peace of mind is reached if i can keep her smile on her.
If the seas are wild then shes an island.
Complete with whitened beach to greet the tide in.
or retreat the hiding where you could flee to dryness.
A peaceful night beneath the sky’s so we can speak in
private.
on the water for an easy ride.
nobodys speaking either. she reminds me of you in
some ways.
its like the redesigned her.
flings rock off the eastern side to watch’em
sink in silence.
I take a knee for her highness.
here mere presence is a gift to me.
i kiss a ring of diamonds.
take pride in the queen my bride is.
Her amphitrite to king Poseidon.
and shes decides in her sneaky slyness she’d
conceive a titan.
Im uneasy.
i can feel the heightened fear inside as tears arrive
her fingers guide me to this breathing child thats lying
beneath her nighty.
she dont have the slightest idea what tonight is.
I hear the singing sirens.
I bid her adieu as she and i collide as My…

chorus
my lady

Not sure if anyone’s mentioned this but I just noticed he says “I drew from you like still lifes but still born with room to move.” Is it “still born” or “stillborn”? ‘Cause a stillborn baby dies at inception or during birth. Hm.

I think the mother drowned;

“That I’m alive in lieu of you and the silence of your tomb/ I hear your cries as you’re consumed/ Your spirit rides illuming under the Twenty-Thousand hues of blue.”

The narrator feels guilty that she died instead of himself. In the last two lines it may show that the body is trapped within the coffin as the spirit roams freely in the sea. Perhaps this means the mother died whilst trying to save the son, resulting in her drowning.

I’m nearly certain “Twenty-Thousand hues of blue” means either the Sea or the Sky…

I’ve considered the possibility that he killed them both.. (Which certainly explains feeling guilty and then drowning here)

The girlfriend has already been explained.
The “saw your chance”-line might’ve been his mom killing his father, and if she then “never saw the man your son is”(which also comes right before the “bid you adieu”, why?), things sorta makes sense.

Damn, this shit is complicated.. But reading this thread is definitely interesting!

Couple quick things that I noticed…
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before. Sorry if Im repeating

“Her Amphitrite to my King Poseidon”
- Amphitrite is the wife of Poseidon and was regarded as a symbolic representation of the sea. Further hammers home the point that this is his wife that he is talking about. In poetry Amphitrite is often used to mean the sea… possibly something there. Poseidon rules the sea and Amphitrite is the sea so Poseidon has full reign over her??? Not sure where this is going.

“And she’s decided in her sneaky slyness she’d conceive a titan”
-There’s something funny here. The titans were the forefathers of Poseidon and Amphitrite so the metaphor doesn’t really work. However the Titans were always at war with the main gods and there are several stories of them killing children to try and gain power. Not sure if this has anything to do with anything but I thought I would put it out there.

“Flinging rocks off the eastern side to watch ‘em sink in silence”
-I feel like this line is important but have no clue what it means. Anybody have a clue what Tone is referring to?
