I’ve been thinking about “My Lady” alot and I am about to overanalyse the hell out of it, so here we go.
1)“So regal, beautiful”
2)“So radiant, vibrant”
The introducing half-bar of each verse is similar in its wording but means totally different things. The first regal/beautiful is the type of way you’d speak about somebody you look up to, perhaps a mother figure. I’m not going into that just yet, and then on the flip side there’s the “radiant, vibrant” ‘my lady’, this is the lover who reminds him of “regal beautiful”. They do say guys tend to fall for girls similar to their mothers. Hmm, interesting. Lets dig a little deeper.
3)“As soon as the moon can be viewed in full”
4)“I’m alive in leiu of you”
5)“In the silence of your tomb, I hear your cries as your consumed”
6)“As the dawn advances I bid you adue”
7)“Like a phoenix rising”
Yep, “Dracula”. I said it, honest. It’s right here. Of course i’m joking (kinda, maybe not). The line marked 5 (tomb/consumed) reminds me so much of the part in Dracula when Van Helsing and his army of misfits go to kill Godalmings undead fiance. Also, this makes the others lines above pretty damn obvious. The line from the second verse (yep the smack in the face phoenix one) takes this “Dracula shit” to a realistic theory. Perhaps there is some talk in this song about ressurection (well there definately is [pheonix, duh]). Also (she reminds me of you) comes into play now. Perhaps this song centers around the way people can be ressurected within their family (you know, genes and shit). If first verse is about his mother, second maybe be about his daughter (and hence first verses granddaughter). Lets keep it moving.
“Mom and dad arguing, saw your chance so I guess you took it”
9) “I felt your heart as I grew in your womb”
10) “Loves to pretend your my mother again”
11) “Barely remember you tucking me in”
12) “Carried the term but never saw the man that your son is”
This sounds very Kno to me (ala “Family Ties”). As in the story Kno tells of his mother leaving whilst he was young. Now i’m starting to think this song is maybe both artist talking about about their respective mothers. Not sure yet, listening to the second verse deeply will probabily fuck my thoughts up. Anywho…
Radiant/Vibrant time. So is Tone talking about his mother now? The last point really fucked up my ressurection idea (so much it makes me want to punch puppies [the one which loves QN5 perhaps?] when I hear the Phoenix line, cause I liked that theory). Anyway, this verse is very greek mythology.
There’s a line which I can’t quite deciper about the king Posiedon and she’s sneaky and fucks off with a Titan, or something like that. Now Posiedon was an Olympian, a group of 12 gods which over thrown the Titans (not the one’s from “Remember the Titans”). So i’m thinking perhaps Tone is talking about a woman who he fell for because she reminded him of his mother (and the Phoenix line is about her being a breath of fresh air). Then this girl does the dirt on him and runs off with one of the bigger boys (the Titans to Tone’s Olympian). This all comes to a head with the singing sirens and then they collide. So perhaps he’s comparing her to a siren and he’s the guy from “Homer’s Odyssey”. Also there’s a part where Tone compares her to an island and I THINK he says he retreats to Hydra which is greek island (not the one they keep Polar Bears on in Lost). I’m probabily well off base with this verse because I don’t have lyrics and i’m terrible at getting every word.
Right, so looking at it as a whole, i’m thinking now that the first verse is more about Kno’s relationship with his mother than anything else whilst the second is about Tone’s relationship with a woman who reminds him of his mother (and he compares to a greek godess) but she does the dirty on him. All metaphorically of course, this is coming from the mouth of the protagonist who is neither Tone or Kno, but metaphorically I likes it. I liked the idea of the woman in the second verse reminding the speaker of the woman from the first verse (i’m thinking 1st verse mother, 2nd verse lover) but it doesn’t really match up with all the “barely remember you tucking me in” stuff from V1.
But yeah, 2 cents thrown in. Probs a million miles from any true answer but that’s what theorising is about right. Also, this song directly ties into each of the three clues.
1) Waiting to breathe - - - “I feel your heart as I grew in your womb”. Pretty much right there.
2) love keeps the stars in the firmament and imposes rhythm on the ocean tides - - - Well there’s talk of the moon, looking at the stars and knowing it’s you. This whole love/star thing could be worked quite well.
3) _fanned by a _pale mist the heart _flutters - - - I don’t know…in Homer’s Odyssey isn’t there a mist around the island which allows the boat to crash into rocks whilst being drawn by the siren song which makes the heart flutter? Maybe, maybe it was just released on April 1st knowwhaimsayin?
Either way, I think the main theme of Chico and the Man is going to be love and more importantly the women who affect peoples lives (not just lovers). This was already pretty obvious, but i’m basically saying I can’t see how it’s gonna be about Cuban Revolution [although it probabily will be now!!!].
I should really read back through this for any hope of cohesiveness but—clicks create topic—
I was thinking that the “Mom and dad arguing, saw your chance so I guess you took it” line meant something along the lines of the mother committing suicide. Now I’m thinking more of a fire situation where the mother saves the son (he’s “alive in lieu” of her and “like a phoenix rising” line). Not sure but interesting commentary above nonetheless. I’m sure once the whole album comes out, things will be more obvious.
