Substantial :: Official Substantial/Burns Discussion Thread ::

There actually is a back cover. I’ll holla at Tone about posting it.

Cool.

After one listen,

‘W.W.K.Y.A. Tour’, ‘The Memo (Move Me)’ ‘It’s Showtime’ and ‘A Reason to Smile’ are what stand out. ‘Reason to Smile’ is a beautiful beat and the outro on ‘The Memo’ is HEAT. Need alot more spins though.

Right OK,

‘Showtime’ - Nice intro track. Some nice punchlines (‘pump ya fist like girl on girl action, lol). The beat is nice (but there’s much nicer to come).

‘A Reason to Smile’ - This is a nice upbeat instrumental, reminds me of something Four Tet would do with that kicking bass. The type of beat I could just spin for hours, or though the night and dream to.

‘Do What We Gotta Do’ - This is my first ‘favorite’ on the album. I was hoping for a Kokayi verse though. Dude knows how to hit the hooks though, second only to Deac, but that was a slight disappointment (that he didn’t spit a verse).

‘Logicool’ - This is the first track that sounds like something which would have fit on ‘Sacrifice’. Capital ID spits nice, but to be fair there isn’t really a ‘WOW’ factor there. This joint has a really well layered hook (Steph always comes nice with the background harmonies).

‘Nobody Cares’ - The drums are kicking but I don’t feel the repetitive ass piano key. The beat could have been really nice with a lil composition there. Stan and Wealth come nice (Wealth impresses quite a bit actually), but that piano key irks me, it sounds too loud, I dunno if that is something done in mixing but it just stands out too much.

‘People Gon Wake Up’ - Truth

‘Open All Of My Soul’ - This is a real chill song. Probably my favorite on the album right now. I’m really feeling the strings section on this one. I don’t have alot more to say yet because i’ve mainly been jamming to the beat on this one.

‘The Memo (Move Me)’ - I wasn’t a fan of this track building up towards the release. It’s started to grow on me, the beat is kicking and Stan spits some real truth, but what I really like on this one is the interlude. Got damn, one of the hottest beats i’ve heard in a MINUTE.

‘Daycare Gig’ - LOL

‘WWKYA Tour’ - Not much I can say about this, eF@mm is heat regardless. Very funny lines in this joint, and Tone is at show stealing best. I’m still up in the air about whether I like the Burns or Kno beat better.

Overall this is a solid 4.5/5, very chill music, I could probably just spin this joint 24/7 for months, and well, probably will. Still taking it in though, only had it a day!

alright finally got some down time so gave Stan’s music a true sit down with headphones and listen time

Showtime: great opening track. Definitely a good track to open up shows with
“teal a show change our stage name to Burglary

And drop gems like thieves with butter fingers”
love those lines right there

A reason to smile: things like this and the “go/wait” beat on sacrifice sometimes make me mad. I know they’re interludes, but sometimes the beat are so nice I want to hear Stan do a verse over them.

Do what we gotta do: might be my least favorite track. The beat just pulls me out of the song.

Logicool: Def in my top 3 for this album. That hook is so smooth. Capital ID flows nicely on this beat and compliments Stan well on the song. Stan is getting is grown man on in this song and you can hear a lot of his sincerity in the song.

Nobody Cares: It’s a nice song, but can’t say Wealth’s verse was among my favorite on this album. I get why Stan’s concept of having Wealth on there, but I think it was me having a hard time buying into hardships from a 15 year old. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s life experiences and I’m just being too judgmental.

Open all of my soul: umm the entire first verse is crazy good. Then Stan bests it in verse 2 then again in verse 3. Third verse drops knowledge and the Stan’s passion/ambition for everything he’s doing now is really evident in that verse.

Memo: Loved this song since day one and still do

Daycare gig: lol

Wwkya tour: obviously a favorite. Can’t hate an Extended Famm track. The song makes me want E F@mm to do a damn tour sometimes. Tone, Pack, Stan all destroy this song. The complexity and thought put into these type of songs just keep getting better each time.

Okay it’s time for more album facts:

Fact 4: I always wanted to do a song to the beat: A Reason to Smile, but it just never hit. I’d often just find myself getting lost in it. That’s what made me decide to leave it as is.

Fact 5: The beat for “Do What I Gotta” is actually my second favorite Burns beat. Second only to “Let It Go. What do I know??? LOL

Fact 6: The thing that this album has in common with Sacrifice is that the Extended Famm song was the last one to be written.

Randomness:
In regards to Wealth and “having a hard time buying into hardships from a 15 year old”. I definitely understand where you guys are coming from. But, I have a different view only because of the youth work I do. I can honestly say that I’ve worked with a lot of kids younger than him, that have criminal records longer than your favorite thug rapper. Not too mention the half-ass job their parents do raising them. I’d get more into what Wealth’s personal experience has been, but I don’t want to put all of his business out there but, let’s just say that his life hasn’t exactly been easy. They make Oscar winning films about people with his challenges. Just something to think about.

the more i listen to the song, the more i like Wealth’s flow. it’s an impressive flow for a 15 yr old.

Another solid Sub-Stan release! Was a bit unsure on first listen, but has grown on me a lot the last two weeks. Production is dope, but it’s the type of production I appreciate THAT much more when high(and I’ve been broke ever since I bought it :p), it kind of remind me a bit of to this union… The interlude after The Memo is amazing! Stan’s flow is always sounds so effortless and together with his voice it always compliments the beats nicely. Everything sounds like it comes straight from the heart.
Open All Of My Soul, Logicool & Nobody Cares = fav tracks.

Fact 1: I love “let it go” Wink

randomness: I might have to let “nobody cares” sink in a bit more. My sister was a teacher in New Orleans in an 8th grade class of 12-17 year olds, all of whom had kids or criminal records. She used to tell me some fucked up stories, so Wealth’s hardship definitely isn’t out of the scope of reality.

Nobody Cares might be my favorite track. Even with SJv2 coming out Substantial/Burns is still in heavy rotation.

I like Capital ID’s NFL’s in “Logicool.”

Never feel lazy, Never force life, Never find love, etc.

Pretty good review. Donno where he got that Sacrifice dropped in 2005 from.

yeah… I don’t know what’s up with that either. Might’ve mixed it up with Sacrificial Lambs

I went back and listened to the EP again today, and it’s still fresh
The Memo (Move Me) and Logicool are still as meaningful as ever
WWKYA still kicks my ass
probably going back into rotation in my car this week alongside IFHR

Yep, this has just dropped back into rotation for me as well. Very nice EP, makes me pretty damn excited for ‘Mr. Robinson’s Neighbourhood’.

^^ same. i’d forgotten how much i loved it…. anywhere i might find more releases from Burns?

OMG!! I’ve forgotten about Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood.. NOW I’M HELLA EXCITED AGAIN!!!! Thanks, ianism Smile
