Tonedeff Your top 15 Tonedeff songs (Discussion)

Right, so i’m thinking these boards could do with some useless discussion to keep them a little more active, and since I like lists I figured i’d start the first in a series of discussions regarding our favourite songs of a certain artist, beginning with Tone. So my list is below, i’ve gone for Solo work only (lyrically, so no EF@mm but CatM is good to go).

I’m hoping this gets ya’ll out of the woodwork and chatting again. All I did was go through my Tonedeff library, pick my favourite 20 songs, cut it down to 15 and then rank them, give it a go, you may see a few surprises in there! Anyway, here’s mine.

15. Shag

I’m a big fan of perverted Tone. Some of his best, most catchy songs are what I like to consider the ‘Pervert Chronicles’. Four of these songs make this list.

14. Spanish Song

One of my first Tonedeff exposures was this. Fun, stupid hook and great lyricism. I always picture a video of Tone rapping on a spanish beach. Would be awesome!

13. Fast

We all know Tone likes to sing. There’s always been at least one per album, and this is the best. Heartfelt and true, Tone shows his underestimated skills as a singer/songwriter.

12. Heavyweight

‘I rap faster than Twista’. Not Tone’s favourite style but still very enjoyable to use fans. This is some break your neck shit right here. Oft overlooked on Archetype but absolute classic.

11. The Distance

2009 was quiet for Tone on the mic with him kept busy with label stuff but he still found the time to drop this gem. Tone and Kno work together like a dream and this song is so intricate i’m still not sure what its about!

10. Close

Part two of the ‘Pervert Chronicles’. This song closed the awesome Baby Blue for Pink and gets altogether too little recognition. Absolutely awesome and shows off Tone’s filthy mind to a tee.

9. Disappointed

Another of Tone’s filthy songs. This guy makes some music that just has to be turned off when your parents walk in and this is one of them. Underneath it all though this is a hilarious tale of dates / hookups gone bad.

8. Space

Probabily the most contraversial spot on my list. This song gets NO talk on this site but I absolutely love it. The wordplay is astounding and I personally thought it would be higher on my list but just couldnt fit it in.

7. Pervert

And here it is, the #1 Tone is a pervert song is…Pervert. This track is hilarious and the switch from singing to rapping is one of my favourite moments on music. On certain days, this song would be number one.

6. Politics

Heartfelt, vicious and true, this song gives us all a glimpse of what Tone has to go through on the daily. The beat switches up about three times and this song shows other genres what hip-hop is truely capable of.

5. Porcelain

I imagine this might make alot of people’s top 3, if not number 1. I love it and it got me through a messy break up a few years back. I guess thats probabily why I cant listen to it so much anymore! Alot of personal shit attatched to this track.

4. Monotony

I imagine this will be another unpopular choice but I absolutely love this song. If this was Tone in ‘96 / ‘97 then I really don’t get why dude is still striving 14 years later. Hints at alot of his future genius are found here.

3. Masochist

Very important song to me, much like #1 and the two go together very well. This song probabily gets the most play from Archetype now, despite me overlooking it for years! It doesn’t get much better than this. This isn’t just rap, its something special, something more.

2. My Lady

This song is at number 2 and we don’t even really know what it means yet! I imagine this is going to have alot more meaning once CatM hits but as of right now it’s just absolutely beautiful and if you haven’t hit the CatM forum then do so, there’s some guys in there who’ve ripped this song down line by line and found the hidden meanings. It’s astounding.

1. Optimist

As someone who battles with depression from time to time, this song has become very important to me during the dark days. It basically saves my mood as soon as I start to feel down. Listen through Optimist a few times and I feel better, this is how powerful this music is, and it’s an absolutely astounding song. The beat switches, choruses, bridges, verses, singing, all perfect. It’d take alot to take this song from number 1 for me.

solo stuff only? b/c for me velocity, love ain’t and the gates would definitely be on that list.

You have solid choices on there. I’d just find room in there for No Hope (maybe my favorite Tone song at this point), Competition is None and Ridiculous.

Yeah, it got to hard to pinpoint everything for consideration when I included collabos. It’d be interesting to see your list if you’ve got the time Very Happy

My honorable mentions include : Synthetic, Hypocrite, TNT, Archetype and Give a Damn

BTW, this list made me realise, the majority of Tone’s tracks have just one word titles.

solo songs only:

My Lady
Gathered
Monotony
Archetype
Homecoming King
Fast
Synthetic
Bring It
Frequency
Heads Up
Case Closed
Move In Ride Out
The Distance
Falling Sky
Coffee / Space (tie)

The top 5 are pretty much definite..

1. Porcelain
2. Masochist
3. My Lady
4. Fast
5. The Distance

The rest get pretty hard to order because there’s just too many and I don’t wanna forget anything.

What are Falling Sky and Competition is None??

“Competition is none” is off the hyphen ep. Lyrics are dope. Word play like this through the whole song:

I end quotes like double apostrophes, put commas in comas
Make you dash to the doc, to check your semi-colon for melanoma
Revoke your diploma, low marks to question me
Bastardize the alphabet, and ask him which parentheses/(parent he sees)

a top 15 is a bit much, lol

Just a few points for discussion, of course..

Heavyweight - Overlooked? Are you kidding me? I’d say this is probably one of the most famous/popular songs off the album. Tone’s second verse on this track is probably my favourite overall.

The Distance - In what sense are you not sure of it’s meaning?

Monotony - This track is ill, definitely. You’ve got a fair few of Tone’s ‘older’ tracks and out of them all, this is classic for sure. Hands up who has the T-shirt? “live to be free, revise the hip-hop mentality.. you must be stopping the monotony”. This is pretty much the song that defines QN5’s conception.

Masochist - This is definitely a track I overlooked at first, probably because of the tempo.. but has become one of my favourite QN5 songs with ease. I think the more you learn about QN5 and the struggles of Tonedeff.. the more you appreciate all of the hard truths nailed home on this one.

Optimist - There’s a line in this song that always snaps me out of a depression “Nobody wants a Bitter Benny or a Debbie Downer/Or a Sad Sam that be wrapping a wet blanket around them/” that just always makes me feel guilty about complaining and self-aware I guess. This is one of those emergency songs you always keep for a rainy day and it always puts a smile on your face.

I don’t have it on my copy (i’ve only got Hyphen downloaded, as far as I know it isn’t on iTunes yet).

and I could have done top 5 or top 10, but I think alot of people will have similar top 5’s. I wanted to see where people ranked some of the more obscure Tone joints.

Monotony - There are def times when I consider this second to only Optimist. Definately one of the best, Tone’s scope back in ‘96 was ridiculous. He should have been picked up by Rawkus or somethin, but then we’d have never got QN5 (or at least not for a while) so it all worked out well.

Masochist - Yeah, this song never really clicked with my until this year. I’ve had the album for 4 years, played it hundreds of times and it’s only just hit for me. Madness.

Optimist - Yeah, awesome.

Top 10 Tone Collabos (alphabetical order).

606 Rewind (CunninLynguists)
Alive (The Plague)

That’s What Happens (PackFM)
The Gates (CunninLynguists)

1. Monotony
2. Ridiculous
3. The Distance
4. Masochist
5. Disappointed

That looks about right…. Monotony just recently broke the number one spot for me, though that’s a hard thing to admit because Ridiculous has been my favorite of his since the first time I heard it.

It’s absolutely unbelievable that Monotony was written over a decade ago. It still sounds more fresh and original than most other hip hop I’ve heard over the last few years…

Im loving the love Monotony is getting. It truely is an awesome song. Its hard to imagine it was written around the time of Pac vs Big, Nas’ ‘It Was Written’, Da La’s ‘Stakes is High’, it was out BEFORE Blackstar, Rawkus, Co Flow. Shit, when Tone recorded Monotony we were all still kickin Windows 95 and it still feels fresh. Tone deserves to blow like whoa.

Good shout on Overture @ #2. I know it’s essentially just an ‘intro’ but this is definitely one of my favourite Tone songs. Sends shivers down my spine.

Okay, here’s my breakdown, though for each song I’ve kept it short:

15. Philosophy Heals The Soul

An excellent song which always connected with me. The harmonies in the chorus are incredible, and the lyrics a brilliant.

14. Fast

This song makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. I can only imagine this song with the most beautiful things on this world, so it gets my instant nod.

13. Move In, Ride Out

I have no real answer as to why it’s in my top 15. Love the beat, love the lyrics, love the layering and it’s a certified banger.

12. Monotony

A song I discovered years ago, which for what ever reason was dismissed at first because I marked as a bit boring. It wasn’t until recently I learned how beautiful this song actually is. For me, this is the late-bloomer song.

11. Archetype

I put lyrics in front of everything, as I feel it is the most neglected aspect of rhyming. ‘Archetype’ has some of the best lyrics I’ve ever heard. If I am to criticizes it then I’d have to say I find the beat a little hard to swallow at first, but it truly grows on you.

10. Warden

In terms of ‘song construction’, I always felt this was ‘Perverts’ counterpart. However, if you look at the original compared to Chew Fu’s house mix, then you end up seeing two different sides of the same coin. I prefer Chew Fu’s mix because some times I need party starter.

9. The Distance

This one hits close to home as for a while now I’ve been living out of a back pack. Also I love story-telling songs, so well deserved in my top fifteen.

8. MoreThanThis

My favorite fully sung song from Tone. The piano and harmonies are incredible, and the message is equally as lush. Top song!

7. Pervert

Guilty pleasure track - Need I say more! Seriously though, brilliant song!

6. Overture

One of the greatest introduction songs of all time, and if you wanted to break Tonedeff down without words - This would be it!

5. Masochist

Always sparks an interesting topic of discussion; Would you put your heart and soul into something that doesn’t return the same love back? Or, what would you really rather be doing right now? Incredible song!

4. Politics

The lyrics in this song have certainly some of the greatest quotables of truth - ever! When people ask me why isn’t Tonedeff famous, I place this song on and tell them to shut the fuck up. lol

3. My Lady

It’s as simple as this, if a song illuminates itself in mystery with the listener trying to break down every single lyric, trying to find the hidden message for the best part of three years, then that song has to be in anyones top five.

2. Porcelain

The very moment I fell in-love with Tone’s music is when I played this song for the first time. The reason I’m here talking about this today is all thanks to the moment I hit track number seven on ‘Archetype’. ‘Nough said!

1. Frequency

I do not think I will ever be able to give anyone a reason to why this is my favorite song from Tonedeff - it just is! Lyrics are incredible, song is simple but effective, harmonies are hauntingly awesome. It’s just the song the fits me best I supose. In fact, I’m gonna play it now!

^ Oh yeah, I totally had Move In, Ride Out in my top 5 the first time I tried to answer this question, and then forgot about it. I think I’d replace Disappointed.

1. The Distance

I love everything about this song.

Im listening to it right now, its really hitting home right now as I sit here bored and lonely in my hotel room lol

Business trips FTL oh well

Word. Tone’s a musical genius.

No Hope is not only my favorite Tonedeff song, it is my favorite song of ALL TIME! I’m expecting Chico and the Man will change that, but until 2012 I bet this will continue to be my favorite song ever.

Agree with all of this.

Personally, I think 15 is a little much at this point in time. My top 5 are:

1. Porcelain
2. The Distance
3. No Hope
4. Optimist
5. Masochist

By the way, does anyone know where or if I can get the instrumental to “No Hope?” It’s probably my favorite of Kno’s production work, just above “The Distance.”

Now seems like a really great time to do it, since when Chico and the Man comes out I wouldn’t be surprised if his top 15 came entirely from there.

20. Space

I’m not a fan at all of Tonedeff’s “battle raps” which makes him sound IMO like one of a hundred other underground/net emcees with forced punchlines but this song is pretty clever and well executed. Plus, the last line is just hilarious and comes completely out of left field.

19. The Distance

This track should probably be higher, but it isn’t since I find it sort of too complex and abstract to really enjoy and I’m not the biggest fan of Tone’s “quiet flow” which is why “My Lady” and “The Gates” aren’t on this list as incredible a track as it is. Still, “The Distance” is a wonderful song from the rhymes to the chorus to Tonedeff’s vocals in the background. And you gotta love how he suddenly changes perspective at the end of the last verse.

18. Masochist
The first song on this list from Archetype, the first of many. Masochist has so many great aspects to me: the memorable piano playing, the memorable chorus, the opening lines “Everything happens for a reason”. This is definitely one of Tonedeff’s more personals tracks and I love it for that.

17. Fear
I think overall this is an interesting track that Tonedeff does a great job with. The beginning especially is stand out to me “Now who’s afraid of the big bad wolf / That’s if you can admit if you get that shook”. Personal and creative while containing very nice rhymes, a hallmark of Tonedeff’s style.

16. Heavyweight

One of my favorite Tonedeff “fast flow” tracks. On these tracks, Tonedeff isn’t as concerned with getting a message out or addressing a topic as he is just demolishing the beat with a flow that IMO no one can matched. The multis on this track are just crazy. A very energetic track I love listening to.

15. No Hope

I feel this song should and probably will be higher in the future but I haven’t really gotten into it yet. Still, even from a few listens this is a very poignant track about the cruelties of the world and more specifically the cruel death of a young man to some ignorant muggers. One of the things that really impresses me about Tonedeff is his ability to rap about a specific introspective topic while still maintaining very complex rhyme schemes/inner rhymes.

14. Porcelain

I sorta had mixed feelings on if I should put this or not on this list. Sometimes nowadays, I feel as if this song is sort of corny and also that Tone’s flow was somewhat awkward on this (the only song I feel this way about). Still, in the end I decided to keep it since this was the track that got me into Tonedeff and the story he tells is just beautiful and very relevant to many people. The rhymes are crazy here too, I especially love “English lit and diction / Mr. Richard Nixon”. And of course, the chorus is HEAVENLY.

13. Politics

To start with, I love the hook on the track. You can really hear Tonedeff’s frustration seep through at the sad issues of the music industry. He really breaks down all the politics and back dealing that goes on, and does it while still using intricate rhyme schemes. The Budden lines in particular impressed me with their wordplay and relevance.

12. Morethanthis

My second favorite sung track by Tonedeff. A very beautiful, somewhat somber piece that clearly addresses a deeply personal part of Tonedeff’s life. It’s really impressive that Tonedeff would share such a personal insecurity with his listeners, and for that I have incredible respect for him. The chorus, although it may look simple and repetitive, is actually very beautiful and pertinent.

11. Hypocrites

One of the pet peeves of mine in hip-hop is those “backpacker fans” that’ll tell me that Lil Wayne or Drake isn’t “real hip-hop” but that some mad abstract, off beat white rapper like Aesop Rock or El-P is real hip-hop (no offense). This track just addresses my feelings of discontent perfectly.

10. Monotony

I think this track was the first evidence that Tonedeff really was another level when it came to rapping. It’s incredible that he made this song when he was around 19 or so. Over ten years later, and it STILL sounds fresh and relevant. Tonedeff’s flow was crystal clear and very smooth even back then, and his multis are on point. The third verse is especially impressive.

9. Champions

This is another one of the songs I love for Tone’s flow. He varies his rhythm so much throughout the song, speeding up and slowing down it’s mind blowing without needing to understand what he’s saying all the time. But when you do, you realize how Tone’s lyrics are always A+.

8. Perverted

To be honest, I’m not the BIGGEST fan of Tone’s “pervert” tracks. “Shag”, “Disappointed” and “Porn Flakes” are all on the lower end of Tonedeff’s songs to me (please don’t kill me). “Pervert” though, is the exception as I just LOVE this song. I think this was the track that stood out to me the most when I first heard “Archetype”. Again, what other rapper would dare to do something like this, and then pull it off so well? The chorus is INSANELY catchy, and the lyrics are just hilarious. The fact Tonedeff starts off singing like it’s a serenade just makes it even funnier. And then on his verse he shows just how nice his flow can get once more. Overall just a very creative, funny, and PERVERTED track.

7. Velocity

I love this song for fairly obvious reasons, Tone just shows how fast he can rap and how impeccable his flow is. What’s amazing is that he doesn’t seem to really sacrifice his lyricism just to rap fast or pack in multis…if you slow it down each line is still a banger. “Can’t stand these motherfuckers that can’t rap, tonedeff & Stan – instrumental like Sam Ash” is one of those lines that struck me as very clever. And the violins in the beat add to the crazy nature of this track.

6. Fast

My favorite sung piece by Tonedeff. Just a very beautiful, moving piece talking about how sometimes it seems life moves by us too fast. Tonedeff has a very beautiful voice (Pause) and it amazes me how he learned how to sing and play the piano by himself, the guy is simply the most talented person in hip-hop. Just love the mood of this song as well.

5. Case Closed

My second favorite track on Archetype, which again might surprise some people. I’m a big of fan of when Tone flows fast while using tons of inner rhymes and alliteration/assonance and this track is a great example of that. No one can kill a 6/8 beat like Tonedeff does, and the rhymes are just tongue twisters. “This discussion’s meant to function as a general centerpiece sent at these enemies bent on resenting me, better be set if we enter the end of peace”

4. Warden

This might be an eye opener, but I simply LOVE this song. I actually like Kanye’s “Love Lockdown”, but Tone simply took the track and did something completely different, and it was amazing. The hook is amazing catchy: “Give me the blue skies / Give me the sunlight… and Tonedeff’s rapped verse on this track has a very smooth flow too. Gotta love the assonance in “It’s hard to meet in the middle when you belittle the issues we live through”. “Warden” is one of those tracks that show Tonedeff can make a club/”fun” song too, which makes him different from 95% of the rest of those “backpacker” rappers (although I know Tone probably hates being put in that category to start with).

3. Children

My favorite track on Archetype, which is saying a lot in itself. I think I was attracted to this song cause of the haunting, memorable chorus and the majestic orchestral sound of the beat. And of course, Tonedeff once again raps about something that most emcees would never touch upon. I first heard this song when I was still in high school, and it’s even more pertinent now as I realize how correct Tonedeff was about so many things. “I guess the jist of it is, that when you’re big, you’ll just miss how you lived / And when you’re a kid, you’ll just wish you were big” just applies to so many people.

2. Optimist

I think Tonedeff is one of the few rappers that can pull off a track like that; a lesser emcee without as much finesse would’ve made it sound corny or lame. Tonedeff pulls it off perfectly, once again making a track that can reach anyone regardless of their history or personality. “Remember that if you really didn’t believe you’d succeed, then you wouldn’t have tried at all” is one of the most beautiful quotations I’ve ever heard. And tone just absolutely kills the flow in his last verse.

1. Love Ain’t

This to me is the great hip-hop verse of all time, period, and not brag but I’ve listened to a lot of sh!t from underground cats to old school to mainstream “pop” rappers. Everything about Tonedeff’s verse on this is perfect from his flow to his word choices to his descriptions. Every single line is quotable and the best part is that anyone who is human can identify with this track. How can you describe love in around twenty-four bars? Tonedeff certainly manages to do it touching on every aspect from the difficulty it causes to its seemingly contradictory nature to the fact that we as human beings NEED love to why people avoid it. This is simply my favorite song ever. I remember for a week or more I would only be listening to this song (well, the album version and the original with Mr. SoS which I actually like better, no offense Kno Sad

Niiiiice list mayne, that was a really good read, thanks for putting some time into it!

I’m not the biggest fan of Tone’s “quiet flow”

Sometimes nowadays, I feel as if this song is sort of corny and also that Tone’s flow was somewhat awkward on this (the only song I feel this way about).

To be honest, I’m not the BIGGEST fan of Tone’s “pervert” tracks.

So what’s left exactly? haha Make up your mind, dude.

Lol the tracks on my list? I like Tonedeff when he’s showing off his speed and flow (sorry Tone you probably hate that by now) and when he does a deep, personal introspective track but without trying to be too abstract. I like his sung tracks; I’m not the biggest fan of Gathered (*gasp*) and I’d like “Homecoming King” if it was longer.

I think the thing about Tonedeff is that his best tracks are so amazing and mindblowing they elevate my expectations to an incredibly high level. Like if some other lesser emcee made a song like “Shag” or “Book of the Dead” I’d probably be like “Wow, that’s dope!” but I know Tonedeff is capable of far better.

But yeah my least favorite Tone songs are his perverted songs (minus Pervert) followed by his battle rap songs. “Gates” and “My Lady” are still amazing, and I do still overall like Porcelain a lot which is why it’s on my list. I just find his flow a little rushed on parts of the first verse to me.
