Tonedeff Favorite lines from “Demon [EP]”

Now, only 24 hours after the release of this EP, I already feel as if my head is filled with metaphors I nearly can’t comprehend the beauty of. Post those that take your breath away the most after whatever amount of listens you’ve had.

First lines from second verse of Use Me:
“So…did you get everything your heart desired?
And is there anything you want revised?
Cause I’ll go editing the fabric of my being
‘Til the thread of me is casually tossed aside
See I’m tailor-made to cater to your whims “

I feel as if this could be something very personal to Tone, yet it also applies as an ironic comment towards everyone of his fans who’ve complained about getting “old Tone” back and “going back to the roots”. The flow, the delivery, the metaphors - outstanding.

There’s something about this phrase that just sticks. It’s so simple, but meaningful. It’s a reminder to cherish every experience, but simultaneously expresses fear over the inevitable, inexorable, and objectively relentless passage of time—and how it can bury those experiences. It communicates that time is priceless, life is irreplaceable. What you do with that knowledge—whether you let go and learn to ride the tide, or you take up arms and fight—is up to you.

Hold onto this moment. ‘Cause you’re never going to get it back.

If my arms didn’t already have words scrawled all over them I’d get this as a tattoo without hesitation.

Great idea to put some focus on this aspect of the project.
Naturally, the rapping will be getting a lot of well-deserved attention, but I really think the writing on “Demon” is some of the finest of 2013.

If I had to pick some favorite lines right now, it would probably have to be these from the third verse of “Moment”:

“Once upon a time - I learned that time is life,
And procrastination was theft
So, if time is money, then you gonna serve time,
When the time comes, life will pay for this debt/
Cause when time flies, bet it’s first class,
And the time line of credit burns fast,
So it’s high time, that you learn to manage it
and in the interest of saving time/
two-timing, you’ll find is your worst habit/”

But I could really highlight the rest of that verse. Or the entire song for that matter. It’s just outstanding writing, lyrically as well as technically.

I also really like how the super complex writing in the verses gets juxtaposed with the simpler lyrics in the choruses (like deStructuralized’s example). We see it in “Use Me”:

“I’m your puppet, no strings attached.
Complete any task you could dream to ask.
I could pretend that I need you back
So that at opposite ends, we’re an even match/
Damn, I didn’t mean to snap
I will cooperate, tell me your three commands/
The way I coddle you, quell all your greed, demands/
You’d think I’d conjured a spell from a genie’s lamp”

VS

“Cause everybody loves you the day you make em a millionaire
Till someone else can make em a billionaire”

How is Tonedeff not widely acclaimed as one of the best writers in hiphop?

I came in here to post that as well. I love that so much. There are so many amazing lines on Demon, but that one has stood out the most so far.

The delivery of this part is also top-notch. I absolutely love it.

The chorus of ‘moment’ and ‘use me’, as straight-forward as they are, have so much depth. And “if you take away the things they really want, will they still be there?” is great and sung so beautifully.

There’s so many lines across the board and I’ll need to spend more time picking the verses apart. Many of my favourite lines so far have not necessarily been complex, but just painted a vivid picture or captured a depressing truth about time as a master.

As I’m writing this though there’s a quick one that tickles me just right:

“See I’m tailor-made to cater to your whims
for an awesome price, see the cost is pride
If you can live with and admit it’s been a grift/
Stickin’ around for the gifts like a mobster’s wife/ “
