Tonedeff :: Tonedeff Recommends: More music like “Gathered”

lately ive been listenin to alot of other (non-hiphop) music

Gathered is my favorite track on archetype by far

and since then ive found two other songs that I love, that i think resemble the mood and texture of gathered

Bjork - Joga ( i would consider this one of my favorite songs of all time right now)

and I just listened for the first time to Fiona Apple’s Tidal album and

“Never Is A Promise” is amazingggg

are there any other artists or songs I should listen to if I love these three songs but don’t really have any exposure to that type of music? What would you call that kind of music anyway ?? Contemporary Emotional Piano Ballads with Strings? I peeped some snippets of Tori Amos since tone lists her as one of his influences, but I wasn’t really into it. suggestions?

that fiona apple album is REALLY good. Haunting piano. Nice bass. just nice.

Contemporary Balladry

Yes! This is a great post. I was actually looking to post something like this recently, but I never got around to it.

Absolutely. There are a definitely some fresh contemporary balladeers out there, but Bjork is mainly responsible for blending electronic elements with the traditional piano/string elements, (ala “Gathered”). I personally enjoy the more forward-pushing style of ballads mixed with traditional elements.

i duno if its the same audio, but I saw her do it with an orchestra on some performance with radiohead (not together performing separate) on TV, the whole thing was sooo ill

Tone, deff on that Love Ridden Track

My fav Fiona Song. without a doubt!
+ Norah Jones that you missed, she’s great

aly try Little Sister,Foolish Love, Hallelujah, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk and He Ain’t Heavy, all by Rufus Rainwright….great songs

wow tone, thanks for those reccomendations. its crazy that you like ben folds, you and him are probably my two favorite recording artists right now. his live show is spectacular, and he’s inspired me to write songs. i’ll definitely try to check out some of your reccomendations, i’m always looking for good singer songwriters when so much of music today is poppy with no real melody.

I’ve seen Ben Folds live…crazy skills with a piano…

tone, i checked out tori amos by your reccomendation and…my god, she is AMAZING! I’m only like halfway through listening to Little Earthquakes, but so far i’m completely floored, every song is amazing, beautifully written, orchestrated, and performed. Thank you so much for posting stuff like this on your forum, i doubt there’s any other hip hop artist as diverse musically as you are, or as committed to their fans. I’ve checked out Rufus Wainwright and he also seems pretty decent, the Want Two cover kinda weirded me out though…and I’ll try to check out Fiona Apple next. Again, thanks so much for introducing your fans to new different types of music, and flat out being a spectacular artist who makes inspiring, real, incredible, hip hop music. Wait, forget that. Inspiring, real, incredible, music. Someday you and QN5 are bound to get the recognition you deserve.

LOL after Gathered i also wanted to listen to more of this kind of music! Thanks for all the recomendations guys!

Yea, since that tone post I got When The Pawn..which I agree is even better than Tidal and is amazing to me, i can’t even pick a favorite song I pretty much like them all.. I also got the new beck album guero but I guess I gotta check sea change cuz nothing on it really is what this thread is talking about

I plan on buying the Ben Folds and Tori albums listed when I get a chance, still haven’t heard them

if anyone has mp3s of any of the other artists tone recommended so I can peep before buying PM me, cuz I don’t want to blindly buy shit without really having heard it at all like the aqualung damien rice or rufus wainwright recommendations.. im pretty sure I don’t like fisher from what i’ve heard

Check out:

A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms

Amazing CD by one of the best male vocalists ever to sing. If he can land a song with Tori Amos, I’m pretty sure Maynard knows what he’s doing. If you are into heavier stuff that is musically amazing check out Tool. Its heavier, but the songs are usually all between 6-10 mins long. They take their time to develop melodies and build up till you just want to smash/love something.

I mentioned APC because they use strings alot and most of the songs are not that heavy. Give it a go, or check out Third Eye Open, which are a group of strings playing tool songs. They actually did an amazing job recreating the songs with string instruments. Haven’t seen that done with too many bands.

Radiohead - Karma Police

Not really like Gathered but if you like Gathered you might like it! Its a great song! give it a try!!!

Hhaha word. The cover is the antithesis of the previous album, where he’s dressed as a knight. Definitely check out Want One first, (and Poses after that)

Word… Actually, anything by Radiohead from their second album on is phenomenal. I didn’t put them in this post, because their style of music generally isn’t baroque-piano ballads like “Gathered”..their much more guitar oriented.

But if you’re gonna get into Radiohead… go in this order:

Thank me later. Wink

i listened to tori amos when i was 6

my friend know’s her
i like her and ben folds is the shit!

i like radiohead’s music, my friend is OBSESSED with them, but i think i isolated my problem with them.

Thom Yorke’s voice. The same, high pitched, mournful voice for every damn song.

Crazy! i got a friend whos also very OBSESSED with them! his top 10 fav. songs of all time are all by Radiohead! Yeah i like his voice for some songs but he does do that same voice a lot!

radiohead is amazing, whats the third radiohead album tone posted though hail to the thief?

mma productions said:radiohead is amazing, whats the third radiohead album tone posted though hail to the thief?

Radiohead is that shit!!!

Also a fan of…
-Portishead
-Bjork
-Supreme Beings of Leisure
-Sparla Swa

Not exactly like Gathered or at all like it just my 2 cents. Tone I always told you your tracks like “Fast”, “Gathered”, “Homecoming King” & “MoreThanThis” are easily some of my favorite Tonedeff tracks. But that’s just me Smile

All the music you suggested is really tight Tone, thanks for all the recommendations.

I never really got into Fiona Apple for some reason but your post prompted me to check her out, and she is amazing. I already knew Tori Amos was crazy ill, but you gave me some good songs to get to know her music by.

Thanks.

Word, either you hate it or you love it. His voice really hits a nerve for me, though. Gotta love it.

....also check out this dude…he does drum n bass too, so some of his songs are crazy electronic shit, but he does some amazing singer/songwriter stuff….

Listen to “Just For Safety’s Sake” on the music player thing on the site…it’s an amazing song…incredibly well orchestrated and he plays everything himself….

“My heart is sick of bein, I said my heart is sick of bein, in Chaiaiaiaiainsssssss” i can’t get that out of my head

so I bought Little Earthquakes like a week ago, definitely glad I did..not feelin as much as fiona or bjork but maybe she’ll grow on me. “Winter” and “Crucify” are prolly my favorites right now, but some of the songs are too much for me..I like introspective emotional stuff but I don’t think I wana listen to “Precious Things” or “Me and a Gun” ever again, those songs made me feel like shit lol.

The one song this really stands out on is Street Spirit, especially live. That is one of the craziest guitar songs I learned to play. Just insanely fast repeating of a few variations over and over again.

has anyone heard of Esthero, shes kinda tight to me

can someone give me a similar order like tone gave the radiohead cds, for tori amos?

Nice. LE is my 2nd favorite of her albums. You gotta remember, LE came out in 1992. When it dropped, there was really nothing like it out. That was 13 years ago…. the “produced” stuff with drums and all that definitely aged a bit… but the melody and lyricism is still ridiculous in it’s own right.

Yeah, she’s dope. We have a close mutual friend..maybe we’ll work together some day. Wink

lol I was gona comment on the overdramatic snares with mass amounts of reverb that are on all those songs but I didn’t want to seem pretentious

ESTHERO records to cop… IN THIS order:

1) Wikked Lil Grrrls
B0007XT87Q.01._PE26_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

2. Breath From Another
B0000062H5.01._PE8_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

3. We R In Need Of a Musical Revolution [EP]
B00068NVNO.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Hollerate.

“Leather” is my shit right now for some reason, the chord change when she says “why am i heeereeee” kills me

“Look I’m standing naked before you/
Don’t you want more than my sex?
I can scream as loud as your last one/
But I can’t claim innocence.”
- Tori Amos

That’s a bad bitch.

i think i shall buy under the pink when I go get Late Registration tuesday
