Tonedeff :: Tonedeff Recommends: More music like “Gathered”

tone, have u ever heard of imogen heap? she’s like crazy techno/songwriting…don’t really know how to describe it, but shes pretty amazing. i can post one of her songs if u haven’t heard of her.

Yeah, I heard her years ago. She’s pretty popular with the EWF crowd. I gotta say though…that I enjoy her most as part of the group Frou Frou. The Details album is really-really good.

cool, I’d heard about Frou Frou but never really looked into them, I’ll check them out.

Tone I know you were talking about Fiona Apple earlier in this thread…did you hear the news? Extraordinary Machine is being released finally, but its a completely different album produced by Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre’s dude) instead of John Brion. I wonder how this is gonna turn out…

Yeah, I heard. They relaunched her site for the new album. Alot of the songs from Extraordinary Machine are on the reworked album… I personally like the Jon Brion shit better (cause I’m a fan). “Not About Love” from the original studio version is way iller orchestrally than the new “stripped down” Elizondo version.

Fiona needs to work with me already and stop bullshitting.

Hollerate.
Smile

So I noticed this thread( damn when was it made again? Nevermind..) and I checked some shit out cuz I was sick at home and bored as hell…and I downloaded some songs and ‘‘Not about love’’ was one of em..I dunno if that’s the one you are talking about but it says ( v1 )...and well I dunno how else to put it but it’s really cool and I have listened to this all afternoon…8)

Another thing i’d like to share is uhm about Tori Amos..I checked some songs ( cuz of another thread on here) and I liked em but had to delete em cuz my computer was infected with a virus…but today I downloaded ( for now ) my fav song...Cloud on my tongue...Cool

Yeah I like this type of music it’s uhm it’s different..I was gonna say mature but I dunno if that is appropiate but cool point is..I like it and I will keep checkin this shit out….Cool

Oh and Bitches aint shit<<<DOPE Cool

I also liked that uhm…I’m leaving on a jetplane song but damn I dunno how many people have covered that already to be honest I dunno who made it 1st Surprisedops: but it’s cool..

Wanted to bump this back up because I wanted to know if anyone has more music of this type of style….the one’s that were suggested are ill and I could use more.

belle & sebastian
neko case (SHE is the shit. lots of solo guitar stuff, old school country influences. plus she’s totally hot)
electrelane
pinback
broken social scene
enon
the flaming lips
stereolab
nick drake
elliott smith
mirah
portishead

i think y’all would really dig portishead, i’d pick that up before anything else. the album Dummy is one of my favorites of all time.

Good call PretendGirl…

ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS… EVER. Shit singlehandedly changed music and created “downtempo” as we know it.

Their followup was dope as fuck too. Cop em both..your ears will thank you.

B000003TSP.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

The stuff Portishead’s lead singer Beth Gibbons did with Rustin Man is sweet too.

Is it okay for me to post a link?
Amazon has a free download of Tom the Model, which is my favorite song off the album. The chorus sounds like it should be on some sweet 70s cop show.

go for it.

Tone and I recently discovered Dredg. The song “Bug Eyes” is a great power-ballady-ish track, jury is out for me on the rest of the album so far. Also, check Ours “Bleed” and The Verve “Velvet Morning”. Love those tracks.

i wanna give PretendGirl multiple orgasms

I just heard this Austrailian cat, Eran James…some have compared him to Stevie Wonder…I think I read he’s 15 years old, and duke has an incredible voice. Thought I would join in on the suggestions Smile

Nikka Costa <—this chick is FUNKY, I want to be her
Holly Golightly
Frente!
Ms. John Soda
Regina Spektor

most of the stuff I’ve been listing is either female fronted or female solo. girls rule.

I just saw the video for Beck- “Girl” for the first time. Damn. Video is insane. Every landscape folds in three like those hidden “Fold tab 1 to tab 2” posters. It was extremely well done.

If none of y’all listened to Portishead yet it’s about time you started IMing me…

Don’t remember who recommended Bjork- Joga….But shit is great

Her voice in the chorus is so melodic and the words swim with the melody as well, which I just fuckin love….

the 3:59 mark is also just fuckin dope…..Great suggestion…Portishead was also a great listen…I’m gonna be listening to that for a while. Anyone who knows any music related to this field…just keep sending, shit is great.

I don’t think I have, so maybe i will.

I was just listening to this album right now and man. I’m glad I picked it up. Here’s a new recommendation.

Sigur Ros - TAKK

MY GOD THIS RECORD IS FUCKING GORGEOUS!

I don’t understand one word of any of it, (cause it’s in some made up language), but the music is fucking phenomenal.

5 STARS / 2 THUMBS UP !

If you really listen to music for “mood”... do yourselves a favor and buy this new record now.

i d/led sigur ros Aegis Byrtum or watever and didnt really get into it the 1-2 times i tried to listen..iuno ill come back to it

but i finally heard fiona extraordinary machine and OMG @ Not About Love i love this shit i listened to it at least 10 times today..the title track too

I love Ben Folds, Radiohead, Bjork, Tori Amos, and Fiona Apple as well. Very Happy
You guys have some crucial music taste.
Fiona Apple’s “Paperbag” not ballady at all but I love it and felt like I should throw that in.

Also if you like Fiona Apple (her less ballad-like songs) you may like Ani DiFranco. I don’t know maybe I’m way off—just an idea.

I didn’t see the other two pages to this—fuck.
Also Tone i have question you may or may not know
movie soundtrack- I [HEART] HUCKABEES
didn’t Jon Brion work on that? or create it or at least have something to do with it?
Maybe I have no clue what I’m talking about but he sounds hella familiar and I think that’s where from.
Maybe you aren’t even familiar with that soundtrack blah.

Agaetis Byrjun > () > Takk

The new album has some really un-Sigur Ros stuff on it, and I can’t handle it. They are good sleeping/working music.

Actually I just made an mp3 cd that’s a mix of my favorite music for a guy I worked with this summer. If anyone would want some really random shit, I’d zip it up for them.

I have to say…this thread is an amazingly good reference for finding new non-rap artists and musicians to listen to. Ya’ll have very good taste.

P.S.—
new Fiona in 2 days…uh oh…Mike Elizondo you are about to be put to the test…

R-Star. Check this dude out. He used to be in a band “Stage” signed by Maverick, didnt work out so he’s doing his own stuff now. His name is Ryan Star. He literally made this album in his living room, paino, strings and himself, he’s got a decent following on Long Island, but he is so talented it’s incredible he’s not signed solo yet and winning grammy’s. He reminds me a lot of Tone in pure musical talent… interestingly they both list Bjork, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos as influences. Check him out, let me know if you like.

Check out “So Ordinary” first, its awesome.

EDIT: NO LINKS.

Smile Just goes to show that Auralarians have great taste. Wink

Granted, some of the stuff listed in this thread isn’t exactly singer/songwriter stuff of the “Gathered” ilk, but it’s still good music nonetheless. Keep em comin, folks.

wow.

just listened to the new fiona apple for first time.

its challenging, except for the title track—extroadinary machine—which is just pure fucking bliss.

UNBELIEVABLE.

Shit could be straight out of the soulful 60s. Production top notch, great lyrics and her voice… holy shit.

i would marry her sight unseen (and double after)

I’m assuming you’re listening to the Mike Elizondo version that comes out tomorrow?

(not the “heavily tweaked John Brion” version that leaked a long time ago)

If you are, and it turned out well, then that’s fucking awesome.

Also:
This isn’t really of the “Gathered” ilk, as Tone said, but if ya’ll are into Portishead (which was mentioned earlier), you might wanna check out Morcheeba’s Big Calm album…the singer, Skye Edwards, who is no longer in the group but sings on this album, has an amazing voice…and the music is really nice and chill…

Any of ya’ll listen to Morcheeba?
