Tonedeff :: Tonedeff Recommends: More music like “Gathered”

Have you guys been listening to Tori Amos album “Abnormally Attracted to Sin”? I’m really digging that one alot! I bought it in New York after listening to it for free on the plane. It’s a rather beautiful album. Incredible lrycism and an amazing voice, with a chilling soundscape bringing it all together. My favorite tracks are ‘Flavor’, ‘Curtain Call’ & ‘That Guy’!

Haven’t looked into the new christmas album, I’ll do so at some point though!

Sweet! Glad to hear you’re getting into Tori. My fav Tori Albums in order:

1. Under The Pink (1994)
2. Boys For Pele (1996)
3. Little Earhtquakes (1992)
4. From The Choirgirl Hotel (1998)
5. Scarlett’s Walk (2002)
6. To Venus & Back (1999)

The others aren’t exactly my cup of tea…but I still suppport and buy them. lol
This woman is so incredibly prolific. I envy her output.

i know tone’s heard of Emily Haines already. she’s the lead singer for indieish band Metric but her solo stuff is good if you like softer stuff. also her lyrics can be fucking piercing.

another artist i found recently is Bat For Lashes. pretty unique voice comes from being pakistani-born but British. very sombre music

Florence + the Machine is sort of similar but more upbeat rather than sombre.

Little Earthquakes is my all time Favorite! “Girl” being the best track by Tori, followed by “Cloud On My Tongue”. Have you seen her perform these live? Phenomenal!!!

Yep! I’ve seen Tori live about 13-14 times live since 1996.
She’s absolutely phenomenal live, every time.

Alright Tone, gun to you head; What’s your favorite Tori song of all time? (Can only choose one!)

my band just did a daytrotter.com session and tori had just been in to do one the day before! :\

I bought it in stores; I’ve definitely heard better from her imho.

I didn’t really give the holiday record a shot, but do tell us how you it is when you get a chance to listen.

Kid Beyond is an amazing musician.  People see him and think “oh, another beatboxers…meh” but until you watch him layer a song vocally and then sing over it…you don’t know what you’re missing.  Youtube him.

^^ see DubFX, he is one talented dude.

Ok here’s one -

No More Stories Are Told Today I’m Sorry They Washed Away No More Stories the World Is Grey I’m Tired Let’s Wash Away - Mew

Inspired by this thread a went on a whim and bought this album with little to go on. I’ve had this album for a week and its just absolutely incredible. Such beautiful lyrics matched with incredible production. It’s a unique standout in every sense; whether from the high-pitched, airy singing or the harmonic, sensational and constantly changing soundscape which is presented.
After hearing this album I’m an automatic fan! Can anyone suggest any other great Mew albums? I need to be put on!

Best tracks are: ‘Introducing Palace Players’, ‘Repeaterbeater’, ‘Cartoons and Macramé’ ‘Wounds’, ‘Vaccine’ and my new favorite ‘Tricks of the Trade!’

Yes! I’m a huge MEW fan! Sticky melodies, technical change-ups, layering up the wazoo. Great band. Mrs. Deff & I caught them at Webster Hall a bit ago - FUCKING TREMENDOUS live. Their shit is insanely layered, and they managed to pull it all off - LIVE. I was super impressed, cause I love their music.

Seriously, just buy their last two, starting with And The Glass Handed Kites.  I played Kno “Zookeeper’s Boy” on tour in Europe, and he made me play it 5x in a row. lol The album is fly, cause it’s literally BLENDED like a mixtape. They go one song to the next without stopping, on some hip hop shit. Very cool stuff.

Their first album, Frengers is also ridiculoid. Keep an ear out for “Comfortable Sounds” and “Behind The Drapes”

Enjoy!

Thanks Tone, I gave ‘And The Glass Handed Kites’ a preview and it certainly seems like my kind of taste. ‘Special’ & ‘Apocalypso’ are my hit. Will look into ‘Frengers’ soon.

Thanks again!

[SONG OF MY DAY] Health - “Die Slow” // Shit goes hard // http://vimeo.com/6407654

The DopeHouse just posted a Thom Yorke/Flying Lotus collaboration on their website.

In addition to this thread, I’ve decided to post a streamlined version of my [SONG OF MY DAY] list from my Twitter feed here: http://qn5.com/discuss/viewthread/14049/

Enjoy!

i just started listening to flying lotus and i have heard that song but didn’t like his stuff so much unfortunately.

Since this is back toward the top, I wanna ask…

Where is Tone’s original post in this thread on the first page?  There were pics and his feelings about Tori, Fiona, Ben Folds, and maybe…Rufus Wainwright?  1-2 others.  And a list of maybe 5-10 songs by each one that were his favorites.

The only thing I can assume is he deleted it because those artists and song lists are no longer representative of his favorite “contemporary balladeers”?

Actually, the forum migration ate them along with any of the longer posts. I still play those records.

Oh, lame.  I used to periodically look back at that post, it was fantastic.

Here’s another one I just discovered very recently. QN5 artists/schoolers have impeccable tastes. To all of you that give it a listen your gonna very much appreciate that you did, especially you Tone!

Black Sands - Bonobo

Granted, it’s not singer/song writer which this forum focuses on, but I just couldn’t keep this one to myself. Bonobo is a trip-hop/moods producer from the U.K. He’s been making similar albums like this before, but this is a true stand out in every sense of the word. The production on this is the most LUSH and HEART-MELTING I have ever heard in music - period! I’m not kidding, production-wise it rivals that of Archetype by Tone, and that’s a bold statement to say the lease! Not one track falls short either, everything was built to it’s fullest. Just listening to the first track is enough ignite your soul.

Give this one a preview on itunes/amazon. You’ll be glad you did!

(Stand outs: ‘Kong’, ‘El Toro’, ‘1009’, ‘All In Forms’, ‘Stay The Same’ and my absolute favourite ‘Black Sands’)

yea ive been trying to put people on to that album all year.  it was my favorite album this year until janelle monae came and took its spot.  its easily bonobo’s best album.

wtfff @ “Kiara” not being a stand out though.. Prelude/Kiara is still probably my favorite thing ive heard all year

So, Emancipator’s “Safe in the Steep Cliffs” came out back in January! Very solid album with great instrumental production. I find it incredible how he continues to impress though I don’t think “Safe in the Steep Cliffs” is quite up to par with “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough”! Nonetheless, this one’s definitely worth the purchase!

Actually on second thought, I should of added them as stand outs. Like I said haven’t had the album too long so I just wrote down the first to come into my head.

Liking this a lot, good shout Wink

good lookin out! really like the Bonobo album and i would agree that its his best, feels very polished! i also liked the new Emancipator, seems more melancholy and dramtic than the first, cant say i like it less or more yet but good album

Good call on that Emancipator album brother. It’s fantastic! The strings in ‘All Through The Night’ is making love to my ears, and that ending! (prrrrr).

Been loving Black Sands! Awesome album!

I’m glad people are up on Bonobo here. Fantastic production throughout all of Black Sands. I also highly recommend the first Emancipator album. Songs like Father King and Soon It Will Be Cold Enough to Build Fires are among Emancipator’s best.
