Black Sands - Bonobo
Granted, it’s not singer/song writer which this forum focuses on, but I just couldn’t keep this one to myself. Bonobo is a trip-hop/moods producer from the U.K. He’s been making similar albums like this before, but this is a true stand out in every sense of the word. The production on this is the most LUSH and HEART-MELTING I have ever heard in music - period! I’m not kidding, production-wise it rivals that of Archetype by Tone, and that’s a bold statement to say the lease! Not one track falls short either, everything was built to it’s fullest. Just listening to the first track is enough ignite your soul.
Give this one a preview on itunes/amazon. You’ll be glad you did!
(Stand outs: ‘Kong’, ‘El Toro’, ‘1009’, ‘All In Forms’, ‘Stay The Same’ and my absolute favourite ‘Black Sands’)
Liking this a lot, good shout
HA! i’ve been listening to him since i heard couple songs of his (Flutter and Pick Up) in a skiing/snowboarding video game 5 years ago. personally, i much preferred his third album, Days to Come over this - although it is still excellent. his first two are damn good as well, if a little less lush.
Compared to stuff that’s posted earlier in this thread, Bonobo and Cinematic Orchestra aren’t THAT entirely far removed…they have both done stuff with live string quartets playing over hip hop-influenced electronic music. Cinematic Orchestra even has some piano-based singer/songwriter stuff with strings.
When I play Gathered, I usually want to hear one of five songs rights after:
1) Lady Godiva’s Operation by Velvet Underground
2) October in the Graveyard by Grieves
3) Holiday Surprise by Olivia Tremor Control
4) Two Headed Boy by Neutral Milk Hotel
5) Secret Song by Glassjaw (at the end of EYEWTKAS)

Yeah I had a feeling it would, but I’m glad I was able to get some similar music out of it. Search is over for trip-hop music (for now) so let’s get back on the rails. Before I do just want to say a few words…

I gave this one a preview and looked up some tracks. It’s a lot more melancholy than the other but still uses the same lush production. In my opinion, I prefer the newer album as it’s more uplifting however I can see how many would prefer this work.
Hatoa - Bonobo = very pretty.

The Horrors - Strange House
JUST LIKE GATHERED!
Gave it a preview too. It’s interesting; however I’m unsure as to how it sounds like Gathered?! Certainly some cool tracks on here, though the vocals aren’t hugely my thing.

I was just being sarcastic. The Horrors are the farthest thing from Gathered that I can think of. Speaking of which… I need to get back to work.

HA! The Horrors are really big over here. their stuff doesn’t really appeal to me to be honest though.
to get back more to The Topic, I’d recommend Dutch. it is comprised of production by Stoupe (from Jedi Mind Tricks) and singer Liz Fullerton. their album - which came out a week ago i might add - didn’t end up being quite as good as i expected, but it is still a really nice listen. fairly varied selection of songs too
another one which isn’t quite so new is Blue Sky Black Death (the dudes who remixed The Park on SJV2) and Yes Alexander’s album Slow Burning Lights. it is haunting, although the songs tend to sound a little to similar to one another after a while.
ill agree that Slow Burning Lights get redundant, but “Come Inside” is my favorite song off that one. its so dark and powerful, i love it! wish they would’ve done another song or 2 like it.
A couple of suggestions from me for some really nice music (not really sure what the focus of this thread is so i’ll just throw them out there).
The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike! (2004) - Melodic instrumental electonica type music with a hot sounding chick singing from time to time. It doesn’t get better.
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea (1996) - My heart bleeds for this album. His singing isn’t always top notch but it’s too damn beautiful to care.
Arcade Fire - Funeral (2004) - This album is dark in that each song is about death, or at least accepting death. However, it’s pretty damn sublime. People who find Radiohead beautiful instead of despressing should like it.
The Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin (1999) - I’m pretty sure this is a concept album but I haven’t figured it out yet. All I know is that it fucking rocks.
Anyway, couple of suggestions there. Not really a lot similar to ‘Gathered’, but I think this thread has gone off in a tangent anyway, lol. QN5 fans tend to have a good taste in music, and I think people with good taste will like these albums, so knock yaselves out!
^^^ saw The Go! Team live a couple years ago. they kicked ass, always switching instruments and vocalists. oodles of energy. they haven’t released an album since 2006 though and their charisma hasn’t really transferred into the studio from my point of view (on Thunder, Lightning, Strike! it was one guy doing everything anyways…)
Never seen the video before, in fact.. I think it detracts from the music a bit tbh . Love this song, it’s so dreamy. For best use: Play on decent headphones whilst lying in bed, lights off.

That’s one of my favorite songs/videos everrrrrrrr.

It’s definitely up there in an elite list of songs for me

Brilliant song. E.A and I got joint headphones when we were in Ireland and played song after song from our I-Pods. There is a lot of stuff need to look into, so I’ll get started with this.
I’m sure these have been mentioned; didn’t have time to browse the whole thread. I’ve got a playlist that’s a mix of depressing/inspiring songs. Along with Gathered, it includes:
Incredible album. Just released, if you guys are a fan of Sadistik or Kid Called Computer, you will love this album. It still amazes my how Sadistik isn’t signed and his music still brings tears to my eyes!
I loooove Bic Runga, I didn’t know she was from NZ. I bought Beautiful Collision around the time it came out, I think. Awwww Phil, now I’m gonna pull her CD out when I miss you

That’s very sweet Jill Glad you’re a fan. She was born in my city too so that adds to the awesomeness!
Emily Kate - Anyway: This (from what I’ve heard) was the sister of the lead singer of the band Dynamite Hack (the group who did the Boys in the Hood cover). This song was on their debut CD which featured a hidden track with her doing a piano cover of it. I love this song. This is my favorite piano/female vocalist song and I’ve searched everywhere for more of her material but it doesn’t seem to exist. Almost like a one time thing.
Emily Haines is very good as well. My favorite song of hers is Doctor Blind from her album Knives Don’t Have Your Back.
Holly Brook (the chick who sang the chorus on Fort Minor’s Where’d You Go?) is another one of my favorites. Cellar Door would probably be my favorite song of hers based on the last verse alone. She has a great voice.
I haven’t read through all 5 years of the replies on this thread so I don’t know if these names have been mentioned yet. I’m a sucker for females and piano and, while Tone isn’t female, the artists I mentioned and Gathered remind me of each other.
