Sufjan Stevens
Sondre Lerche
Turin Brakes
Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry
If I haven’t said Pinback yet, I should have. If I’ve already mentioned them, they deserve another.
I was with you until you listed this fellow. I know all the tredny indie-rock critics are cumming all over themselves to put him in their articles these days, but I can’t get into dudes music at all. It’s a tad generic for my tastes. Kinda like Bright Eyes. It just doesn’t do anything for me.
Which brings me to my next point. I’d prefer if we keep the recommendations to an efficient stream, as opposed to randomly naming groups that you “Like” for 1 song. I’d prefer folks named 1 artist with a tremendous album than 209 artists with a few listenable songs.
I’m all about biggin up new music, but I think what ends up happening is that everyone starts throwing random chips in the hat for the sake of having something “new”. I’m more about “good” than “new”. No disrespect.
With that said… here’s a couple incredibly underrated albums I think y’all will dig.
Hooverphonic. - Blue Wonder Power Milk
This record is brilliantly produced… it’s like a “pretty” Portishead record with airy-er vocals. Check out “2wicky” and “Renaissance Affair”. I seriously dig it and I think y’all will too.
The Cardigans - Gran Tourismo.
Although, I love their other albums, this one is all trip-hoppy and stuff. Extremely well done and atmospheric. I’m a sucker for Nina Persson’s voice, so what can I say. Pick it up.
Blah okay. As far as Sufjan goes, I thought his Michigan album was pretty sub par but everything I’ve heard on his Illinois album has been really wonderful.
Let me qualify a couple of my picks:
Turin Brakes - The Optimist LP - Two (British?) dudes with guitars, barred from touring the US after 9/11 because one of the guys was born in Jordan, but I think they’ve since been allowed clearance to come into the country. They are both really amazing guitar players.
Roxy Music - Stranded - If you don’t have this album, your collection is not complete. Rolling Stone listed it as the #75 album of all time, and I think that is short changing it. If anyone has seen SLC Punk, they did the song “Mother of Pearl” on it. This album is from 1989 I think, and it is such a pure rock album.
yeah sorry I flew off there. I’ve tried to list a lot of different stuff while still trying to keep a songwriter focus because I think my taste is almost overly broad, and I know not everyone is going to like everything I list. was thinking people might try to hunt down a song or two and see what they like. anyway, bright eyes sucks.
Tone man you keep on posting good stuff…I’ve been bumpin Blue Wonder Power Milk for a while, another amazing song on there is “Battersea”
As far as singer-songwriter stuff, this isn’t for everyone but Joey Eppard of the band 3 (yes the name of the band is the number “3”) is amazing. There isn’t really a guitarist out there that equals him, in my eyes…he plays this crazy style that’s a mix of slap and slide guitar, also has a great voice (although its pretty high). If you like softer stuff, try his solo album “Been To The Future,” or if you like harder rock try 3’s album Wake Pig. It’s all pretty epic with complex arrangements (the group has two guitarists, and two drummers, along with a bassist).
Substantial said:Tone I always told you your tracks like “Fast”, “Gathered”, “Homecoming King” & “MoreThanThis” are easily some of my favorite Tonedeff tracks. But that’s just me
ha, that’s actually one of my ipod playlist. also have overture, reprise, porcelain, and philosophy heals the soul on the same playlist.
I wanted to add quite a few artists/albums, but a lot of them have already been noted.
As for a couple, I couldn’t help but grin when I saw Ms. John Soda (No P. or D. is my shit), and although I don’t yet have Gran Tourismo, The Cardigans have been nice for a while.
I am surprised, though, that no one has listed Massive Attack. More specifically, Massive Attack’s Mezzanine. Whether or not you’re into electronica, this is a great album. It starts off with Angel (played in Snatch and Flight of the Phoenix), and doesn’t let you down from that point on. It’s kinda dark, but really smooth (heh, like a musical Guinness).
Buy it and be fuckin’ glad I told you to!

Yeah that’s a great album, I used to listen to it all the time in college (my friend’s copy) been meaning to pick it up and completely forgot about it…thanks for the remineder!!
Pretendgirl…thanks for the Portishead jumpoff…very good!!
Dr Gonzo I think you just stole my heart. You are seriously the first person I’ve encountered who knows Ms. John Soda. Can I also assume you’re a Notwist fan?
Glad to have reminded you of great music
and glad to be a heart thief,
but unfortunately I’ve never heard Notwist. However, the name does sound familiar enough, and I work in a [bad] record store. Even if I didn’t want to hear them, I’m sure that in time I’d run across the band. I’ll keep an eye out and an ear open…
I’ll probably do some digging for it too.
And yes, my name is Dr Gonzo- so yes, you do. Thank you very much.
back on to the Radiohead Vibe, Didnt anyone like ‘The Bends?’ i didnt see tone mention it, that was probably my favourite of all their albums.
Also along that vibe, ‘Stereophonics - Performance and Cocktails’ i first got this album when i was around 14 or somthing, it still get a heavy rotation in my stereo to this day, one of my few Non-Hip-hop Albums.
Alot of the music my Dad plays sounds Amazing, but i dont like to go down and ask what it is you know how it is
Wow, looking back in this thread on the first page today, I decided to download Beck’s “Sea Change” album…and it is pretty damn good. Thanks again for the recommendation.
Hope this isn’t getting too far from the original subject of the thread but…for some really pretty instrumental stuff, check out this band Explosions In The Sky. They did the Friday Night Lights soundtrack, and there is some really nice stuff on there and on their other albums. Producers, you could probably find some amazing samples here…really beautiful, melodic songs, nice orchestral arrangements. Check it out.
I know a LOT of people who think The Bends is Radiohead’s best. Personally I have a hard time deciding between it and OK. Regardless, “The Bends” is my favorite song of theirs. When I saw it live, I was totally blown away.
aight, i dont listen to much of a variety “music like gathered” but i do listen to alot of the same songs from artists. since yall dont post tracks.. i will this is one of my favorite ones, its from the ending of the movie “prision song” with Q-tip (perfect endin song to a movie) ...
