The Monotone EP [1997]

The Monotone EP originally hit the internet like a tidal wave in 1997. With the advent of MP3.com, IUMA.com, Amazon.com, and other similar indie-friendly online outlets, Tonedeff released this record to a download-hungry fanbase and ignited what would become his label, QN5 Music.

After leaving Miami, FL for school in Orlando, Tonedeff breaks off from his first crew RBM, to create his first solo project. Co-produced by college classmate Mannyphesto, This record is the defining moment in his career, as he begins to find his own voice as a singular emcee. The result...an unbelievably eclectic collection of songs that show his his full musical range...albeit, in a minor way.

Here Tonedeff begins to break out of his 'rap-only' shell, and composes the classic, "Homecoming King" and the anthemic, "Monotony". This record also marked the first time an MC has attempted to lyrically ride a 3/4 time signature to any success, (See "Synthetic") . Also included on 'Monotone', is the ode to friendship, "Philosophy Heals The Soul," which Tonedeff wrote at the age of 13.

Due to the lack of proper equipment, the actual recording quality of this album is sub-par [including a botched mix of "Porn Flakes" and sans-piano-solo version of "Fixed"]. Regardless, with The Monotone EP you can clearly trace the roots of Tonedeff's current sound and musical direction. For this reason alone, this record is a definite must-have for avid fans and collectors.
