[NEWS] R.I.P. Nujabes

Posted 1 day, 5 hours, 23 minutes ago by QN5

Jun Seba (AKA Nujabes). Rest In Peace. [Photo: Yosuke Moriya. (Summer 2009)]

The International Hip Hop community has lost a great one, as we’ve just learned that talented Japanese producer Nujabes (Jun Seba) was killed in a tragic car accident in late February. [OFFICIAL STATEMENT (JAPANESE)]

As many of you know, Nujabes was responsible for the production and release of Substantial’s first album, To This Union A Sun Was Born and served as pivotal figure in his career. Substantial will be issuing a statement regarding this unfortunate tragedy shortly, as this loss is in addition to one in his family this week:

RIP Uncle Milton gone but not forgotten & RIP Jun Seba aka Nujabes. 1 of the first 2 ever believe in me & my gift. – Substantial [VIA TWITTER]

To quote from frequent collaborator Shing02:

We deeply regret the loss of a unique talent and a close friend….He was a mysterious character to most as he avoided the public limelight, rarely conducted interviews, so only a few got to know the man behind the signature production. While we continue to respect the privacy of his family, we will work to preserve his legacy, and pay tribute to the body of work, some unreleased, that he has left for us to enjoy. Jun Seba will be dearly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and fans worldwide.

Our condolences go out to the Seba family and our brother Substantial in this tough time.

J-Zen – “Iron Horse (ft. Substantial)” | BUY: [ALBUM] | [7” VINYL SINGLE]

While touring Europe with CunninLynguists in Spring of 2009, Substantial was introduced to the good folks from Dooinit Music, a small indy Hip-Hop Label based in Rennes, France. After hearing several tracks from their in-house producer, J-zen, they immediately explored the possibility of a collaboration.

The end result was the mellow train-commuter tribute, “Iron Horse”, from J-Zen’s new EP, Guilty Pleasure. Substantial takes you for a ride, while sharing the highs and frequent lows of the urban commuter, inspired by his experiences on New York City’s infamous MTA from when he was a Brooklyn, NY resident.

Guilty Pleasure is available now at iTunes and Amazon. Also in stores this month, Up & Up presents Gods’Illa: The Album and Know You Got Sole: The Music, both albums feature new music from Substantial.
