[RANT] A Heavy Helping Of Hype In Hamburg

Posted Feb 25 2008

On the road again! Just wanted to check in with the Blue Schoolers while I had a second.

I’m sitting here in the backseat of an 8 passenger van, as we careen around the highways of Germany on our way to Cologne, our next tour stop. I’m sandwiched between a ton of merch boxes, luggage and Natti laughing hysterically at Bill Burr’s Emotionally Unavailable comedy album. Oh, and Sweden’s DJ Fo’Rilla is with us too.

Last night we played a club called Waagenbau in Hamburg Germany along with Hilltop Hoods, who are basically the biggest rap act in Australia – but you wouldn’t have known that judging by their super-chill demeanor and overall friendliness. Which brings me to an interesting observation I’ve had over the years: It’s always been amazing to me how much more gregarious successful people are as opposed to many of the underground rap superheroes are that I’ve met. It’s almost as though indie rap acts have to convince themselves that they’re important in order to feel like stars. Real stars want to be normal. Go figure.

Hilltop Hoods & CunninLynguists In Hamburg, Germany

As far as the show itself goes, Hilltop Hoods went about setting off the night properly and got folks into the right mindset for a night of New Hip Hop. Definitely check them out when you get a sec. CunninLynguists are featuring me as their special guest on the german leg of this tour, so I’m rocking a shorter 25-minute set before they hit the stage, which is good because it’s a chance to warm up for the full-on sets in Paris & Switzerland. I’m still toying with idea of performing “Close” from Baby Blue For Pink at some point, but I have the feel like the crowd’s ready for it. We’ll see…cause I love that song.

CunninLynguists Holding Shit Down

CunninLynguists are breaking out a great mix of their 4 LPs lately. Now that folks are familiar with DA, it’s good to see them shouting out “K.K.K.Y” on cue or wishing themselves to “Mexico” when the beat drops. It’s really exciting personally, to be able to experience this group’s rise in the past few years. I mean, how many people can say they’re close personal friends with the best group in Hip Hop right now? Now, all they need is the right push in the states, and shit will explode – I guarantee it. It’s just a matter of time, folks.

“So, Cunnin’Lynquistz, Dis Is The First Time You Come In Hamburg, No?”

But man, yesterday was a very very very long fucking day. I think it clocked in just over 40+ hours with no sleep – just driving, flying, driving, riding a ferry, soundchecking, getting ready, doing interviews, performing, selling merch, and then finding a morsel of Burger King before passing out from sheer physical exhaustion.

First shows on tour are always a little arduous, ESPECIALLY overseas, because it takes so fucking long to get here to begin with – but moreso, because it’s the point in the tour where you have the most merch to lug around and absolutely no idea of what to expect from the crowd.

Funny enough, dudes are too pussy to rock my “I Love The Vagina” tees, yet women love them! If that ain’t irony for ya…I dunno. S’too bad I didn’t print any for the ladies, but now I know better. In the meantime, you can cop the available ones at www.Ilovethevagina.com – and no, I’m not kidding.;)
